A machine fit for Elite at last

A question about track ir, if I may. When you look up in your cockpit, can you still actaully see the monitor, or do you have to squint?

E:D has a bunch of rather unnecessary usability issues with TrackIR, since it relies on UI elements parked at really inconvenient locations, i.e., the side panels, and also insists on putting more complex interfaces like the pause and station menus on moving frames. That means you may want to frequently disable TrackIR during gameplay, and especially if you're wearing glasses, you'll likely spend quite some time fiddling with response curves so you don't work around the rims every time you need to do anything but flying straight.

All in all, I don't think the game is really suitable for headtrackers. It's great functionality during maneuvering and dogfighting, but apart from that it's just painfully obvious that it wasn't considered in the overall UX design.

Some time ago I started this thread https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=34902&highlight= because I was disappointed that my old clockwork computer was not going to fit the specs of the game and so, thanks to very kind words of support - surprising after a whine - I decided to 'stealth build' a machine, one part at a time until I had one made.

And it's made!

I5 320 (1155 mobo)
4gb Ram
GTX 650 (used, so as to be in budget)
well, that's the important parts.

The only downer is that I won't be able to buy the game before the 22nd as I don't get paid until the 27th. Sigh.

Still! Huzzah, etc. Have a glass of wine, nibbles in the corner, etc.

What setting levels would I be getting out of that?

Well done :) It's harder to cobble together a machine on a budget like this than building one with a massive budget. There is much more bang for your buck in that machine, and Ill bet you get more enjoyment out of it too. (Also having the SLI option as a further upgrade is sweet, and if you can pick up a cheap SSD for your maindrive you'll be amazed!)

Thanks! The community here continues to have high end specs. :D

That is a common concern about the Track IR, the answer is, you don't move your head that much.
Its small movements, and it throttles as your head gets closer to the edge of the turn. Ie the more right your head turns, the faster the rotation on the screen..

Im making this worse.... the answer is NO you don't need to squint. It is comfortable and you can see the screen easy.

Try nodding at your monitor keeping your eyes central... Thats kind of it..

Thanks psykokow,
I get the gist of what you're describing to me. It was a concern of mine as I do want to get either track ir or occulus rift for this pretty soon. I'm leaning more towards the occulus at the moment, especially since FD are going to support it more. :)

Shok.
