A Million Ways to Die in the Black

Ok, for giggles, I thought I'd start a thread about dying. My main commander has died 24 times in 4 years. Don't remember all of my deaths, but the ones I do:

  • Ran out fuel in a Sidewinder. This was before the Fuel Rats and seems to be a right of passage. ;)
  • Dropped into a signal source (again with the sidewinder) to find a bunch of gold just laying around. Suddenly an overpowered Anaconda and companions show up to declare their trap sprung.
  • Bounty hunting in a Resource Extraction site, got my tail kicked, decided to flee only to kiss a spaceberg.
  • High gravity world, noticed something on the edge of my "radar", rolled about to investigate not fully realizing how much weaker my lateral thrusters were.
  • Another high gravity world (Strong G) came in too steep, plummeted towards the ground, pitched upwards, fired thrusters, over-reacted and hit the ground anyway.
  • Climbing out of another (not as) high gravity world, systems shut down after having cooked them earlier on a visit to a black hole. Simply didn't have enough time to reset anything before I did a little dirt surfing.
  • Data run to Hutton Orbital, 10kls give or take out from Eden, get "target sighted" message. Drop out of supercruise so that I could lose him that way only to have him enter the instance right in front of me. Slam into him, shields gone, hull several dented, finished me before I could get away.
  • Chose a side in a combat zone, eventually retreated to station for repairs not realizing it belonged to the opposing faction. Crime detected!!!

My other commander, has died three times, account only a year old.
  • Obsidian Orbital burning. Filming a scene for one of my videos, needed to dock at the same landing pad as before and didn't realize there was a bug that left the other pads lit after cancelling. Landed on a pad, couldn't figure out why the dock wouldn't engage, jumped back into the ship only to see 3... 2... 1...
  • Ranking up with Federation, running data missions when interdicted by FGS, ship still outfitted for exploration and just couldn't outfly FGS.
  • Same mission, same NPC, retreated to station with the hope that the station would intervene but he blows me up anyway. Turns out, because of another video, "report crimes against me" was turned off.

So... anyone else willing to admit their demises? :D

I don't die very frequently, but when I do it's usually either because a) I bit off more than I can chew (combat wise) or b) I was alt-tabbed looking at my other screen when jumping into a system, and make a fumble of the controls when approaching the star.

Last time I died was trying to do a Wing Assassination mission for a Pirate Lord with a friend, and we got obliterated. Was a FDL with an escort of three Vultures. We should have known better, but wanted to give it a go.

  • On a smuggling mission almost passed the mail slot but panicked after the computer said "scan detected" and boosted shieldless into the back of the station. (That was probably the worst one for me but also a long time ago.)
  • Wanted to supercharge at a White Dwarf but hit the exclusion zone (the jets were relatively short), couldn't escape and decided to self destruct to skip to the inevitable (FSD was already damaged too much).

Boosted into the interior wall of a station a couple times in my early days. Thought I was pushing the landing gear button. We've all been there..... right?

Six times in my first Sidewnders, just to get out of the Star-port; for the first time, in the seventh ship.

Last time i died was Mining in a un-engineered python.. smashed right into an asteroid! LOL ..( got my shields and hull engineered right away lol )

the time before that i was AFK and came back tot he rebuy screen in solo play . lol

beside that I never die.

Most of my deaths come from trying turn an Asp Scout into a combat ship.
I accidentally emergency dropped short of a station in a Type-6 and some commander in an FAS followed me in and absolutely destroyed my anus before the FSD was off cool down.
My first experience with a Neutron Star got my Asp Explorer.
I've eaten an asteroid with an Eagle on at least one occasion.
When I first got a Python I docked at an outpost then came back to a rebuy screen, I'm guessing I inadvertently selected launch rather than enter station from the menu.
I ran out of fuel on the way to Maia in a Cutter, so decided to to see how hot I could get hear before she blew (1200+%!).
I somehow managed to speed in a Type-10 while heading towards a station and clipped a shieldless Type-6 that then exploded for some reason, inspiring the station to destroy me in short order.
I've lost a Type-9 twice to NPC pirates due to an irrational stubbornness to high waking out, and the same Type-9 has twice been killed by a station after ramming another ship to death in my attempts to get 3 boosts off before exiting the slot.
The most recent was a DBS that went boom when a 'Vette rammed me, which is a real testament to my situational awareness and pilot skills, getting rammed by slow, lumbering 'Vette while flying a fast, highly agile DBS...
I've yet to die out in the black on an exploration journey, though I try to tempt fate on occasion with some hard planetary landings.

Pressed Self-Destruct.
Lost my bounties and my Wanted Status.
Didn't rebuy the Sidewinder I was in, was transported many hundreds of light years back to where I first began.

The the new C&P happened, and I haven't done this any more.

Most of my deaths came from the pre 3.3 Conflict Zones. Going for just one more kill.

That can't happen now. CZs empty too quickly.

I died once from using a docking computer on a planet. For whatever reason, the DC boosted me right into the planet. That was a long time ago.

Another memorable one was a bug that caused my ship to do cartwheels and zoom around right after launching from a station. It was pretty funny looking tbh. I recorded it and FD reimbursed me. The only time I ever asked for reimbursement.

1st time fell for the gold canisters sitting in the middle of no where in my hauler and got jumped.

2nd jumped in my T9 before I learned of high/low waking.

3rd Came back after long time away from game and went to CZ in my unengineered ship got a shock.

4th was a game bug where the game froze and messed up my controls so station blasted me.

5th was yesterday, bit off more than I could chew and got my canopy blown out ran for it and died 6 klm from station ;( this was the worst one.

I never forget how and why I die I find it really depressing, really gets to me especially if it was my fault which 80% of the time it is.

I remember right after the second Python nerf, when FD intro'd the heat meta.. Lost my Python to an NPC wing that two days prior I would have killed with ease.

The great "Weekend of Death", when FD gave all the NPCs fully engineered ships, with upgraded piloting skills. The salt from that event will never be fully mined. Many a Cmdr saw the rebuy screen that weekend.

Boosting into the back of the star base ( everyone has done that one ).

Feeliing invincible in my shiny new Vette, not even engineered. And getting proven otherwise in a HazRES. Because I forgot two tons of palladium in the hold.

Didn't die, but I remember getting stuck between two stars and over heating. I hit witchspace right at 397 heat. There were little flames all over the dashboard ( really ! ). I didn't know the heat meter could go that high. I laugh now when the computer warns about heat at 80.. Yeah, right, thats nothing.. NOTHING.

Tea and Boosting!!!
I was making a cup of tea and thought I had plenty of time between jumps, as it turns out I didn't.
In a rez zone bounty hunting, boosting and turning at the same time in my trusty little Cobra and ran into a very unforgiving rock ..... I died twice like that because the Cobra was a lot of fun in a rez zone.
I fell for the gold crates too. 1 ton of gold at the time was a lot of money and I thought I can do this ...... I can scoop it and then run ..... seems I was wrong though.

My statistics say: 7 insurance claims but these are fake values.

1st claim.
I was in my early days of being CMDR, trying various things. Heard that slave smuggling is highly profitable. As I'm rather law abiding CMDR and not very good at game at that point I did extensive research. Probably got T-6 or DBX for the job. Properly outfitted for cool running, heat sinks equipped and bound, drop and fast landing procedure known, time to execute. Found cheap source and high paying target. On my way with "cargo" I got pirate tail. He tried to interdict me but I always managed to jump into next system before he starts. Since the journey was like 12 jumps I outpaced him and managed to forget about him. One system before target I decided to run cold test. Mistake no.1. Dropped from SC (mistake no.2), and hit silent running (mistake no.3). And this is the moment my tail pirate decided to drop in. He wasn't happy with my run and I was with my pants down.
Rebuy screen.

2nd claim.
Also pirate related one. I was hauling some legal goods (above taught me not to play with slaves and smuggling) and, as usual with high value cargo, got a tail. Successfully outpaced and proceed to target. But he was persistent. I managed to drop from SC at station location, enter no-fire zone and get close to 5 km. Then pirate decided to drop right in front of me. Obvious bug as you can't drop on top of others and not that close to the station. But bugs don't care and he did what he's done. I was speeding, he appeared like 10m ahead of me. Rammed poor guy at ~250 m/s. He didn't survived. Station didn't cared that bug didn't cared, stated I was guilty of murder and annihilated my ship with all my cargo. Whole encounter lasted exactly 1.78 sec.
Rebuy screen.
Bug report.
Got my ship and cargo worth reimbursed by ED support.
Insurance claim probably remained in statistics.

3rd claim.
Few weeks ago I decided to go bounty hunting for real. Got DBS, outfitted for toughness, strong shields and bit of a punch. Watched lots of combat videos for newbs. Felt ready and went in search of victims. Wanted to find HazRES but couldn't find one. Some said that CZ are good but you must be carefull. Oh well, I see one CZ close, let;s see. What wrong can happen anyway (should engraved that on my tombstone). Dropped, watched how whole bunch of lawless fight each other. Checked with google what lawless means. Happy with result I picked one small fry and started to rain my double burs laser and dual MC. I should mention I didn't pick a side.
Rebuy screen.

4th claim.
Last week I decided to engineer a bit PP for my Clipper. Since she had power issues I took Phantom Krait for a Deciat run. Made all the way there, approached the planet, finished glide just to overshoot target site by 10 km. Instead of upward half barrel I rolled and made downward half barrel. canion below me was more shallow than expected. What? It was pitch black dark.
Rebuy screen.

Other claims are from combat in my early days of trying things. Nothing worth mentioning.

...My first experience with a Neutron Star got my Asp Explorer...

Same, and to my own bemusement, I still occasionally get dreams involving this!

(Only without the 'it just being in a computer game' aspect...)

Must have freaked me out much more than I realised at the time [wacko]

Most memorable deaths in the last 4 years

1. Left my ship flying in a straight line out in open, went to meet the pizza delivery guy at my front door, came back to an insurance screen.

2. Death by FDL whilst my escort did a runner.

3. Death by lava spout

Entering a CG station in Open in my CZ-battered Corvette (some significant hull damage and about 10-20mil in combat bonds), mindlessly request dock and head to mail slot, hear some mild metallic scraping followed by an explosion, see message "Bounty for murder of CMDR XYZ" popup, realize the explosion was my Corvette impacting some poor guy's Eagle and destroying it, get destroyed by station and eat a 38mil rebuy plus loss of all combat bonds [haha][haha]

Edit: I tried adding the mail slot impact victim to my friends to maybe help him recoup his losses but he never accepted my friend request :(

My stupidest was dropping into a non human signal source threat 7 with no weapons expecting a non hostile welcoming party ... I was dead before I knew it.

But just before Christmas I died twice:
Once for turning on a pirate npc who had interdicted me as i was sick of being the coward of the county. Having done almost no combat, and unaware they were a lot tougher post release, i could not get his shields down and he whipped me. Straight after that, having just downgraded my thrusters, I went to see engineer Martuk and crashed into her base!
DOH

Coming in to land in my Anaconda on a surface port, on a fairly high g world.

Overshot my pad and flattened a sentry skimmer. :D

Port wasn't pleased and showed this in the form of beam lasers.

My Anaconda has since been named "Pancake".
Coincidentally, I also brought the Anaconda on Pancake day, 3303.

Take off from a surface port, in Pancake II, and I must have hit launch just before I opened the galmap, after several seconds of browsing for a destination, the galmap suddenly closed, because the base was in the process of removing my ship for loitering. :D

My Python, Thunder Force, just got a god roll on DD5 (old system), so naturally I took it for a spin in a canyon.
Boosted in to a bend, got the infamous 'pitch stall', went to boost again, but forgot my Python was still partially setup for exploration, so my distributor was somewhat lacking.
In any case, there's quite likely a Python still buried in that canyon wall. :D
