A Million Ways to Die in the Black

Parked in SRV, when to shop came back to rebuy screen. Took me a while to realise I'd ran out of fuel which powers life support.

  • Ran out fuel in a Sidewinder. This was before the Fuel Rats and seems to be a right of passage. ;)
  • Dropped into a signal source (again with the sidewinder) to find a bunch of gold just laying around. Suddenly an overpowered Anaconda and companions show up to declare their trap sprung.
  • High gravity world, noticed something on the edge of my "radar", rolled about to investigate not fully realizing how much weaker my lateral thrusters were.
Sidewinder ran out of fuel: almost there with my second cmdr! I accepted a mission without checking the station distance from entry point (it was around 300k Ls). What is even more ironic is that I had a Fuel Scoop equipped but I didn't care to refuel at the main star: I've never ran out of fuel between stars with the other ships so I've never thought that this could've been a thing.
So I flew the distance and I arrived at destination with 1% fuel only!

Dropped at signal source with gold. No but it's been a close call more than once!

High gravity turn: yes on a 3.3G world and a Type 6, by turning to align with the landing pad.

I add:

Insta-death, killed by station for transporting illegal passengers: multiple times... Then I learned how to use Silent Running and Heat Sink efficiently...

I lost a couple of ships early on in my playing to NPC pirates, beginner error, have lost 3 ships to other players - my contribution to CG in open (it was deliberate, no worries) one ship to a High G planet when I wasn't paying attention...

The second best must be losing the DBX twice in the same White Dwarf cone - went in slow (as in Neutron Star) instead of quite fast... Slow learner I guess.

Absolute best, and funniest, was misreading a NHSS 10 as 0 in VR and evaporating as I arrived - I didn't even get to see exactly what finished me off before I could even turn :)

Being killed by your friend Healing beam turret!

Situation, we were doing BGS play, so lowering a factions influence by killing clean ships and authority ships. So we where in a fight killing authority ships and a badly, for us, timed reinforcement arrived and all of the new reinforcment decided to directly focu on they a for some reason they all decided to focus on me, so I got bombarded with dumb fire missiles from the new arrivals and the two remaining authority ships. The plan was that we kill off the two current ships, that was nearly dead and then make a safe retreat, but my now beat up Vulture could not withstand the barrage of missiles so my shields finally failed, and even my hull seems to be made out of paper, as I usually could take quite a beating here as well but soon my hull also failed me, and to add salt to this defeat, the final blow was done by my "friend" and his healing beam turret...

Ok, for giggles, I thought I'd start a thread about dying. My main commander has died 24 times in 4 years. Don't remember all of my deaths, but the ones I do:

  • Ran out fuel in a Sidewinder. This was before the Fuel Rats and seems to be a right of passage. ;) not yet
  • Dropped into a signal source (again with the sidewinder) to find a bunch of gold just laying around. Suddenly an overpowered Anaconda and companions show up to declare their trap sprung. My jaw was on the floor the first time that happened, it was great. I went back to see how many canisters I could grab before I died
  • Bounty hunting in a Resource Extraction site, got my tail kicked, decided to flee only to kiss a spaceberg. yup
  • High gravity world, noticed something on the edge of my "radar", rolled about to investigate not fully realizing how much weaker my lateral thrusters were. yup
  • Another high gravity world (Strong G) came in too steep, plummeted towards the ground, pitched upwards, fired thrusters, over-reacted and hit the ground anyway. oh yes, several times including not realising I was FA-OFF
  • Climbing out of another (not as) high gravity world, systems shut down after having cooked them earlier on a visit to a black hole. Simply didn't have enough time to reset anything before I did a little dirt surfing. not yet
  • Data run to Hutton Orbital, 10kls give or take out from Eden, get "target sighted" message. Drop out of supercruise so that I could lose him that way only to have him enter the instance right in front of me. Slam into him, shields gone, hull several dented, finished me before I could get away. My favourite was 'rescuing' an NPC only to have them boost/ram me to death just as we killed the pirate. That's thanks for you
  • Chose a side in a combat zone, eventually retreated to station for repairs not realizing it belonged to the opposing faction. Crime detected!!! oh yes

And many, many others.

Mostly dumb stuff:
Boosting into things (stations, bigger ships, cliffs)
That USS/cannister "trap" - forgetting I've got the cargo hatch open and failing to boost out of the way, or thinking that I can get that cannister if I'm just a bit quicker!
Getting cooked by a binary pair (back in the good ol' days!).

Seriously, nobody mentioned the noob-hammers yet?
A small number of coriolis stations has these two long arms protruding from them.
One of those is in one of the starter systems. Cost me my first sidewinder.
(Back when bumping in to a station meant immediate death)

It actually took me some time to come across one such station, already being made aware of the risks. I feel like i missed out on something.

"Space golf"?

Fortunately I wasn't playing in those days as I've collided with one of the arms once, no more than a dent in the shields and minor embarrasment :)

It was pretty funny. I had just exited the station, flew around it to line up for the jump to the next system when I'm suddenly watching my sidey explode in third person.
On the edge of the screen I can just make out one of those arms slowly rolling on.

Speaking of the good ol' days, remember 'emergency beacons'? I do. I remember when they took them away, too.

I was in a hauler, doing a rares trade run. It was a long distance but it looked like I had enough fuel, according to the map, so I headed off, no scoop, just cargo. Got to the last system, very low on fuel, and thought, 'I should have enough to reach the outpost I'm heading for', so instead of making a pitstop at a proper station much closer, I headed towards my outpost much further out.

I kid you not, I was inches from latching onto the pad when my fuel ran out, and I thought, 'okay, I'll just hit the emergency beacon and pay premium for fuel', and discovered it had been removed.

I self destructed literally inches from the pad with a cargo hold full of rares because fuel rats didn't exist yet :(

39 Deaths in the 1100 odd hours I've been at it.

So many in CZs thinking I can handle that one damaged ship and a few involving planets and gravity.
My greatest was getting annoyed by being sent to a detention facility and when I un-docked I opened fire on them...that didn't go so well TBH.

3000/3001/3002:
My cat jumped on the keyboard, sending the ship with boosters against the side of the orbital station.
Same cat, different station but same keyboard encounter: but just after departing the pad so hit the internal wall and another ship. Didn't survive.

3004/3005:
Did not die, but also do not have a cat anymore but two dogs and they remain on the ground.
