Newcomer / Intro A new commander with a Type 6

Greetings fellow commanders,

I began playing Elite Dangerous only this month and have already logged 46 hours. Great addicting game. I know some stuff already mostly about trading.

I currently fly this T6 build and use it for those long range hauling missions I recently discovered bringing in quite some good money (about 5 million if some missions are stacked for 180 ly travels).

Only problem is the range when fully loaded because then it takes quite long to reach the destination and of course interdictions.. I have relatively good shields I believe? but I am still afraid of some super NPC shredding me on on of those trips. I do not dare yet to go into open mode because all I did regarding combat are the tutorials and only the first few. So basically I only know how to shoot.^^

So do you have any tips for making it a bit more survivable?

Also, my next goal is an ASP Explorer.. want to actually go exploring with it (perhaps CGs). I have about 18 million in the bank atm.. might get more quickly if I don't get killed.
How much should I spend on an fully outfitted explorer ASP?

welcome to these forums, cmdr!

to make your t6 more durable (and you have 18 mio in the bank),

a) more speed: best powerdistributor (3A) for constant boost, better thrusters (4A)

b) pointdefence against npc spamming missiles, and chaff. add the best shieldbooster you can power to the mix

c) give mines a try, the t6 is good for running, mines are your friend for this. fit a turrett, if you don#t go with 2 mine launchers

d) for better jumprange: a class FSD

e) reduce your lifesupport to class d, as your sensors: less weight, less power, more jumprange and speed

f) i personally would take a class 4 shield (4A) in these dangerous times - nearby 50% more shields.

if you haven't done exploring yet, why don't you refit your t6 and do a first tour to see some local nebula? the t6 is a very underestimated explorer (beating the DBE on long distance races). there is no reason to wait!
 
My multi-role Asp Explorer build was 51,000,000 (2,500,000 rebuy) so you would need 60,000,000 cr to build this allowing for rebuys.
 
I've spent a lot of time in a T6 both trading and exploring. Mines are awesome for self defense. Don't even bother with guns on a T6. My technique was to run and spam mines until I was able to either destroy the attacker or jump out of the system. Plus what was said above already about maxing out your critical components. But yeah, Asp Exp will have superior jump range, maneuverability and weapon mounts. I just find Ap Exp internal bays somewhat not flexible enough for my liking.
