A new commander

Needing advice guys. I'm playing thru the combat scenarios with the Sidewinder but can't get past the first fight. The other sidewinder is always behind and the manoeuvrability, even with boosted engines, is so poor I have no chance of getting a shot on him. What am I doing wrong?

Cheers,

Cmdr Tersius

What ur doing wrong is asking the question instead of practice :)
But if u need combat advise hit the YT vids, there are many on the subject.

Get your speed/thrust into the 'blue zone' - it vastly increases your turn rate and the like, what control method are you using?

Another tip is not to give up - it takes a lot of practice to get 'good' at combat!

Keep at it commander! :)

Also you can set the amount of power that goes to each system, engines, shields and weapons. Default for this is the arrow keys. You'll notice that you have two 'pips' in each system to start with. You can adjust this to put more power to the engines which allows you to turn faster. The downside is you'll have less power to the shields and weapons, so you'll need to practice juggling the power to whichever system needs it at the moment.

Use of vertical thrusters as you pitch will also help you turn faster (default r,f keys).

You may also want to bind a key to 50% or even 100% reverse thrust as you can use that to help you turn tighter as well, or even shoot the guy as you travel backwards.

Unfortunately all these things will require some practice to master.

Thanks. I took Theo's advice and kicked that sidewinders ass :D. I'm wondering whether a joystick would be better rather than keyboard and mouse?

Both are viable, if you are using mouse switch the controls so that mouse does pitch/yaw and bind roll to 2 convenient keys, its very playable with kb/mouse.

The joystick is a good option if you have/can afford one, (with buttons/HOTAS preferably), but by no means is it 'essential'.

^^This. I was having a hard time getting used to the default mouse/KB keybinds. Changing the mouse X-axis to yaw instead of roll made a huge difference for me. However, as I have read elsewhere, they designed the flight model as a "roll/pitch" instead of "pitch/yaw". Meaning the ship will maneuver a left hand turn much quicker by rolling 90 degrees left and then pitching up rather than just yawing to the left. And I have found this to be very true, but it is hard to get used to with a mouse (at least for me). The flight model makes more sense with a joystick, but I do not own one at the moment.

Not sure if you'll still need help by the time this post is approved, but usually keeping the throttle in the blue zone is the best way to get around on opponents, coupled with flight assist off (If you know what you're doing).
Generally I try to avoid boost-turns, as the way boosts are working now they bring your ship up to or near it's top speed. So if you haven't turned all the way around by the time your boost ends it leaves you vulnerable.
If you were in a turning fight you've probably just opened a lot of distance by boosting and now have to shed your speed for a second or two before you can even begin to bring your nose around on a target that's already lining up on your six. It's really an exercise in discipline to avoid hammering the boost button excessively, I really only use it if I need to get out of an enemy's firing line immediately. All this goes doubly so for faster ships with higher top speeds (i.e. The Viper. Pressing boost in that thing brings you up to 500m/s regardless of pips, totally ruins any positional advantage you or your enemy may have)
There is a bit of a trick to using boosts to turn with FA off, but I still haven't figured out how to control the distance on that turn myself yet.

I'd definitely suggest you invest in a joystick. The x52 pro is by far the most popular joystick for the game but is a bit expensive. A much cheaper alternative is the xbox360 controller and according to Michael Brookes on tonights twitch stream it is very good for using with the game. Another good thing in the xbox 360 controllers favour is that its more cheaper than a joystick.
