A new holo-display?

Ok, in my opinion the UI, mostly left and right hand panels, do feel cluttered a bit. Isn't it weird that your battle targets are on the same panel as your navigation and powerplay ?
Isn't it weird that your module handling is on the same panel as inventory for synthesis, random statistics, next to fire groups?

I think FD went the right road when introducing SRVs and Fighters, building a dedicated panel below you. It's practical.
So, why not a panel above your head? Obviously everybody's used to the current configuration and its flaws, but what if you could customise the new panel and have some sort of shortcut to your desired display, be it inventory, sub modules, etc.

I know I'm kinda dreaming. But I hope that Fdev takes this road for the next UI add-ons at least. Stop adding to the overloaded existent and create something new.

PS : to those who'd say it would even more clutter the view in mouse/free look, I'd like to point out you have options to hide them, in case you didn't know.
OPTIONS > CONTROLS > MODE SWITCHES > LOOKING AT **** PANEL > DOES NOTHING

Or how about a new UI module to purchase that does this if you can afford it?

I don't think it could be a paid feature.

For instance you've got a dedicated synthesis display, on the top, allowing you to keep module management selected on the right. It avoids unwanted circling through the right hand panel, thus makes you a tiny bit more efficient - with something you paid.

On a very high end PVP situation, this tiny advantage you paid for, is very very undesirable. It's the road to "pay-to-win"

I disagree. You pay for just about everything else.

A pannel above your head would get in way during combat, especially in small fighters where the whole point is having a wide field of vision is important

IMO it wouldn't get in your way more than the left and right panel that literally ask you to stop looking through the canopy in some ships.
Don't forget you have options to deactivate the panels popping in, in free look.

I mean no disrespect, but could you please elaborate?
My point is paid store features should remain cosmetics - quality of life should not be paid.

Not talking about expansions there.

You pay for bigger and more powerful weapons, shields which improve your Quality of Life. Limpets and Hatch Breakers are not necessary items but make things easier so they count and QoL items as well. Docking Computer? Definitely QoL. Most things in Elite are QoL improvements one way or another, not all of course but most.

This would be a similar thing.

Now, you may not agree that bigger weapons and stronger shields are QoL improvements but Limpets? Hatch Breakers? 4 slot Planetary Hanger or 2 slot Hangers? These are all not necessary items so they must be QoL items. Things to make it easier, faster, more efficient than the basic items.

Oh my bad! Don't know what made me think about the store in Mark's post. maybe the "if you can afford it" because everything's pretty affordable in game.
Then yes. Sorry I misread.

No problem, I've answered your post anyway to give you a better idea of what I mean.

No overhead holo, please! I look up to track enemies and the station when doing spiral approach. Don't want anything poping up there to obstruct the view.

In fact, I would like a function so that unless you press a key/button, looking at the direction of the holo display does not bring up the holo. That is, w/o the intent, press a key/button, you can freely look around w/o being obstructed by the holos. This is particularly useful in SRV driving. I don't know how many times my SRV bump around and one of the holos got brought up unintentionally taking the control focus so my boost or other commands did not work.

Please do not cluter the view even further!

I've said it 2 times, including my OP. I'll say again : you can deactivate the holo display popping up when you look in its direction.
So please bear with me and read whole posts before making your mind on the matter.

On pc at least, and I'd recommend looking on consoles as well :
OPTIONS > CONTROLS > MODE SWITCHES > LOOKING AT **** PANEL > DOES NOTHING

I'll edit my OP with that...

The current holos indeed can be deactivated, like you mentioned. But, it's an all or nothing affair. I deactivate it, I can no longer bring it up in game unless I waste precious buttons to bind each holo to a separate button, thus at a distinct disadvantage, particularly if they put important combat functions in there like you suggested.

The current design of holo and the chat box pop up is already quite cluttered. Try go drive an SRV around some bumpy terrain or a base, and look around and see if you wouldn't accidently pop out some holos.

Ship holos, on the other hand, currently are in the directions of way "inside" the ship, so whenever I look in those directions, I indeed "usually" have the intention to activate the holo. That's good GUI design, no mistaking user intention, well at least most of the time. But, if you put a holo overhead, that's no longer the case, particularly for ships with wide canopies like Lakon ship.

from the moment you can deactivate each holo display individually, with respect, I don't see where your problem is. pick the ones you like and keep them, move the others such as otherhead.
deactivate the overhead. If it's a shortuct to something you already have and like the way it is, don't use it. I've been very careful not to imply that current configuration should be replaced.
If they add more things and options, on the other hand, yes I advocate for more than we already have. but that time will hardly ever come.

If you need it, push the button.
Who is scared of keyboard bindings in such a game though.

edit : scared was a bit strong, sorry.

They don't really effect combat but one right in middle of where you are tracking your target will. UI can be turned off it you want a view but you are hadicaping yourself by turning it off. Adding more clutter in the UI especially in an area that that effects the field of vision is just dumb.

Nobody is scared, that's you just being insulting. But if you use HOTAS and VR then using a keyboard is not possible. That why it's called HOTAS. Hands On Throttle And Stick. You don't take your hands off the controls and you certainly do not use a keyboard especially if using VR as you can't see it.

How are you handicapping yourself - by needing to push a button? to me the handicap is to have to circle around displays, using freelook or keybind to open them.
But ok moving on. Not liking the word dumb in any way.

Ok, I get that point there.
Sorry for being insulting if that's the general feeling. It must be that I am, did not intend so.

If you play in VR or use a a controller (not all platforms have hotas and the PS4 one is very limited) then yes it will get in the way.

Yes I get that.
That's why I figured out it could be an optional shortcut thing rather than a mandatory screen with relocated features from elsewhere. I know I'd use it. I use a mixture of hotas, keyboard and mouse.
But ok, not for everyone. No dev time to lose then.
