A new Titan?

Last edited:
I was determined to future proof my rig in anticipation of the pimax and any potential new headsets that get released next year. The plan was to get a 2080 ti but it seems there is a new Titan about to be released...

Hold the phone... :x

More details

Outperforms the 2080 ti but I’d like to see some VR tests...

Twice the price for what will be a bump in performance... But it's your wallet. Maybe you'll finally be able to run BFV with raytracing on ultra and get 60 fps...

It is silly money, but so is the 2080ti. If I plan to keep the card though for at least three years, it’s really not that expensive a hobby.

I think it comes down to performance... Assuming money is no object and this thing can go 20% faster than a 2080ti it could be the only truly suitable card to power the 8k.

As soon as you buy the TITAN RTX they'll come out with the TITAN RTX Xvwtf*

They love to bait.

Buy a 1080ti and see what the next series brings.

Quite possibly but I’m fairly certain my 1080 isn’t going to cut the mustard and so I need to upgrade to something...

The 1080ti isn’t giving the performance needed with the pimax.

No, it wont. And just to know I am with you. When it comes to finding the money to ultimately get a PIMAX5K, 8K, or ultimately an 8KX running in Elite - I am with you. I do think the video cards are going to have to catch up. For the moment I am running the Samsung Odyssey+ and happy with that bump in res - but longterm its still not enough :).

The new Titan is crazy. The performance gain over the 2080ti is marginal, and that warrants one grand extra ? Nope and nope. If we gamers allow Nvidia to continue like that by buying their shamelessly overpriced cards, we deserve no better. Even the 2080ti is at a crazy price.

This is why Nvidia doesn't market this against gamers.
It's a budget deep-learning etc etc card for the grad student who can't afford $ 30k worth of Quadro cards.

That said there are plenty of morons with too much money out there that do buy them for gaming, and they do work for that, but honestly you probably would be better off running two 2080ti's for that.

I can't see the Titan being worth the price bump over the 2080Ti (which is already way out of the value proposition vs a 1080Ti), but it's your cash.

I think I'll hold out with my 1080Ti and see what is next for AMD and Intel. Kinda hoping the other two can bring it, and keep the costs down. 95% of the performance for 50% cost would have any player dominate the market. I really think team green are just milking it while they can.

My fastest card is 1080 and that won’t suffice for the pimax. I have to buy something. IF it transpires that the Titan can actually power a pimax then (if you have the money) it’s worth considering. People spend their cash on all kinds of stupid things (IMO) @Tortorden but I wouldnt call them morons... I don’t drink for example and haven’t for over ten years. How much cash did I not waste?

Enough for a Titan?

Anyway until they get in the hands of some pimax testers I’ll hold off... it doesn’t look like I’ll be getting the Pimax any time soon and the odyssey + works fine on the 1080.

I don’t think anybody in their right mind would say its worth the money, but it may well be the only card that can currently drive the pimax pr0perly.

I want to play ED in a wide FOV with a decent frame rate. This may be currently the only way to do so...

Fair enough - I guess the question is whether it's crazier to have a piece of hardware you can't fully utilise, or to pay insane sums to allow said piece of hardware to be fully utilised! Tough choice.

Why not hold off until next year when AMD releases their next gen of cards (1080Ti equivalent or better). which will be considerably cheaper than Nvidia's offerings.

Other things to consider, More horsepower doesn't necessarily translate into better VR graphics as the software for both the game and Card needs to be really optimized for VR, e.g. in ED orbital stations and on some planetary stations the frame rate drops drastically with my 1080Ti, will a more powerful card solve that perhaps, but is it worth spending thousands of dollars for a marginal improvement ?, not for me.

There will always be something better and faster a month after your purchase, its a mugs game and the OEM's know how to con er sorry manipulate their fans.

I'm holding off for my next upgrade to a Pimax 4k until next year, let it mature, also after AMD's card offerings and if that's insufficient then I'll look into upgrading in 2020.

but...... whatever makes you happy :))

With the reasoning of "there will always be something better and faster a month after your purchase" - then why wait? Just wait only to have sometime better and faster a month later?
Its an endless cycle, everyone has their own entry point when it comes to tolerance for the state of a particular technology matched against cost.

I just got the Samsung Odyssey+ which I LOVE, and it will very shortly be surpassed by all of you getting your 5K....its an endless cycle. Point is I am enjoying the hell out of it right now, and the little 1080TI I picked up helped too....or should I have waited for the 4080TI? :)
