A Pirate's Life - Open Piracy Video

Here's my first video showing what pirates do in open and pretty much how we do it.

Hopefully it will give you a few tips on what to do to avoid damage or death or what to do if you want to start pirating.

This isn't intended to start a griefing discussion. This is showing how one of the advertised professions works under the current game mechanics.

Ship used : Asp

Macro done using razer keyboard.

It's the first time I've done a proper video so there's a few rough cuts and the music is a bit loud in places :)

I would like to see a heavier penalty for anyone you (accidentally or intentionally) murder but overall reasonable pirating practice - I am aware that you could/did select your clips carefully of course.

Thought people trading when interdicted might be a little more chatty when interdicted (but maybe that is just me).

Overall - I enjoyed the vid.

The penalties for murder are ridiculous tbh. I've always been a proponent for higher penalties and better security.

I picked my clips carefully for my first video to show a balance of encounters. With no other valid piracy mechanics you are limited with what you can do to pirate other players or npcs.

My personal view on piracy is :

1. Always message your target
2. Never shoot unless you have to
3. Stop shooting on submit
4. Always go for drives
5. Always back up your threats
6. Never take cargo from the same player multiple times in a play session

I'm also always willing to chat and haggle :)

if you wanna show balance of encounters then you should show videos of you getting destroyed also .

I will when I get some :p

It's pretty much impossible to die in a combat ship in this game due to high wake jumps. If I enter a system and see a bounty hunter I normally leave. I have a 1.8mil buy back and rarely earn enough through piracy to afford my running costs so I'm not going to take unnecessary risks. It was the same when I was trading, if I was pirated I would stop and drop cargo as a few tons was always preferable to a full buy back and the cost of my cargo :)

+ rep for your rules distance, almost the same as I used when I was pirating, I found it both enjoyable and not too frustrating for the traders that way!

There is a difference between educating your prey in how submitting and giving cargo is better than trying to run or fight and showing your prey how to escape or defend themselves.

Although I would like to see what happens when you interdict a t9 that has turrets rather than fixed/gimballed as one in the vid had.

Being able to escape the mass lock by hyperspacing is illogical for both aggressor and the victim IMO

If it were me and he didn't put them away sharpish the target would quickly become his power plant. :)

When you left I started soon afterwards. I think the game needs pirates but we need to follow rules as well :)

The interdiction and masslock mechanics force this method of piracy. Since anything can escape to a new system instantly we're forced to shoot first and ask questions later rather than taking our time and opening a dialogue.

If the T9 had turrets I'd still be hitting the drives first but would have moved to the powerplant a lot faster :)

It wouldn't end well for the t9 against 4 rails tbh.

Some random comments:

Don't forget that pilots (like me) who are not skilled at cargo-dropping may need more than 5 seconds. Also I can't see the chat messages and threats when I'm in the cargo panel.

That Python should have been able to escape if he had decent shields and knew what he was doing.

Didn't the Cobra pirate check your module loadout before interdicting you? I fly a trading Asp (although Rares rather than Bulk) and I don't consider Cobras a threat, especially those that can't keep up!

Is 350 really your max boost speed? I feel a lot safer now :)

Asps used to be the popular pirate ship. Then they reduced repair costs and now it's FdL and Clipper wings, not as much fun for the victim. The only escape option from them is hyper-jump.

You used /t in Chat to send to the currently targetted ship. I'm sure I tried that and it didn't work. I'll try again. It will be useful for docking collisions :)

All pirates, and anyone else who interdicts (even if just a killer) should send a text message. Very bad manners not to. Last week I had 5 different CMDRs interdict me in the Lave area without any message, although I managed to get something out of them all after some nagging.

Wouldn't it be boring if all the traders complied with your demands?

Nice vid, very much enjoyed it. I'd like to give you rep, but I can't because I gave you too much on the Lugh thread :D

Didn't know mines don't work on shields

It's a shame that pirates can't use hatch breakers, which I imagine was the intended pirate tool of choice.

Avoids the need for a conversation & death.

(Plus, new people will have no idea how to eject cargo - I don't, though I know it's in the RH Panel, somewhere )

In my next video I show a drawn out encounter where I give a pilot time to drop. The problems with the current system is that some players try to stall for a wingman to show up or say "how do I drop cargo" and then combat log whilst you're typing. I usually do give time but instances like these have turned a lot of pirates trigger happy and the longer you're working as a pirate the shorter your patience gets. After 3 combat loggers in a row your 4th target isn't likely to be shown any sympathy for running.

Most of the ships could have escaped through high waking which as I said makes pirate more trigger happy. Whilst it's designed to allow pilots to escape and works well against npcs it's a different story in open against players.

I sacrificed D thrusters so I can boost more often. I rarely go after cobras or clippers so my speed is generally fast enough to shoot a ship's drives out.

I have my macro set to /t as some players have local messages off. I had one for interdictions too but it wasn't working and I just realised quick chat doesn't work whilst the interdiction mini game is playing. I'll be messaging before interdictions in future too to give the pilot more chance to surrender.

It would get boring if everyone surrendered but atleast I could afford my running costs :) It's more fun when a trader grabs a combat ship after an encounter and tries to kill me or run me out of a system :)

You've got no problems from me anyway with your 8 boosters on your anaconda ;) Good to see you on the forum :)

None of the missile based weapons work on shields any more rendering them and their countermeasures useless against players. Good on shieldless npcs though :)

They're too slow and impossible to attach to a ship once you've shot it's drives out due to the ship spinning. They're also shot down by pd so pointless to use right now.

I will generally chat to a pilot having trouble dropping cargo but if they're in anything bigger than a T6 I assume they're stalling for time or about to combat log :(

Yeah thats pretty much my MO in a nutshell.

I've only used the Anaconda for the 'freeing-slaves' and the 'Diso Corn' community goals. 6 boosters, chaff, and heatsink. You may as well use the 8 utility mounts.

I prefer pottering around in the Asp. I can usually escape another Asp without hyper-jumping, but your weapons seem rather powerful, so I'm not sure. I like the way your cockpit is filled with sparks and smoke when you fire them.

I used to hate the Asp but have grown to love it. Can't beat it's jump range and the hardpoint layout is great for fixed weapons :)

A couple of nice takes out there Distance and +rep for showing there are some decent pirates out there and we work hard for our credits.

At least, when they escape into Hyper-Space you can track them, bring them down again and keep hitting them in the drives 'til they can't run no more. . . . Yaaarrrr!

It's not really practical, even with a wake-scanner.

Jump to another system. Immediately drop out of supercruise and then jump to a third system. You'll be long gone by the time the pirate has followed you, entered your drop-wake, and scanned the second hyper-jump.

Has anyone even got a wake-scanner?
