A planet so charming I left an impression on it (and a black box?)

Last Sunday I returned to Elite Dangerous after a little while away.

My ship had been parked up on a cold rock in deep space, somewhere far out beyond the bubble. I was picking up where I had left off some months before; on my 2nd big expedition, exploring strange new worlds. I had charted many unknown systems (including a new earth-like among other stellar gems) and discovered countless new specimens of life in the form of beautiful and exotic flora.

After spending the day with such activities as racing my SRV over an ancient river bed and darting my diamondback through deep canyons seeking an elusive strain of xeno-fungi I picked out a resting spot for the night; a little red planet.

On my approach during landfall I was able to appreciate it up close. It was a charming rust red with a cool dusting of a blueish coal tone. Craters littered its surface, pastel-like expressions of colour crowned their ridges... then I noticed the rock formations and the ground... the ground was coming up a lot sooner and an awful lot faster than I realised.

The next thing I remember is instinctively pulling the nose up of my rugged old trusty ship, but it was too little, too late. An almighty crash with flame and smoke, then darkness.

So I managed to prematurely conclude my expedition along with contributing another crater and expressive smudge of tone, which cost me dearly. All that time, all those discoveries. All gone up in smoke.

It would be really cool if there was an option to revisit your own crash site with a chance of recovering your ships black box so that you can save the data. That would really be something.

Anyway, always go easy on the landing. I've learnt that the hard way!
