A proposal for a bonus rating mechanic based on dinosaur compatibility

The dinosaur roster in the game has grown to a large variety, differing from locations, periods, and families. I think we should incorporate this diversity into a gameplay mechanic to include some extra strategy in building exhibits. It will provide players a fun bonus in dinosaur ratings without needing to make more dinosaurs.

The compatibility rating is a new bonus rating system that makes use of these 3 factors and determines what boost the dinosaur would get. It will consider:

FAMILY
Will the dinosaur be housed with members of their family?

Herbivores (the same as the ones used in the greenhouse):

• Hadrosauridae
• Iguonodtidae
• Ankylosauridae
• Ornithomimidae
• Ceratopsidae
• Stegosauridae
• Pachycephalouridae

Carnivores:

I admittedly do not know the families of all the carnivores in the game, or any future carnivores that may be added. However, in terms of gameplay, these dinosaurs very rarely are compatible with each other as they would attempt to kill each other if they are of similar stature, and the only exception is that of a large carnivore to be housed with a small carnivore with a few exceptions. To which I think we could place them together in a family label of “Therapoda”, which is a very huge classification that doe include the Ornithomimidae. It will help simplify compatibility to this group of dangerous dinosaurs for gameplay sake, but please let me know if an alternative is possible in which we could distinguish them from each other but still have the chance for a bonus rating if we place some members together in the same exhibit.

TIME PERIOD
When do these dinosaurs coexist? This bonus rating factors in the dinosaurs based on their time periods and if they lived during the same era. We could simplify them to Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous so that there will be more options for these dinosaurs to be compatible with each other based on time periods.

LOCATION
Have these dinosaurs lived in the same location? This bonus rating would factor if these dinosaurs were dug from the lame locations. To simplify the choices, they would be based on the continents they were dug from to have more compatible options. So we have:

• North America
• South America
• Africa
• Europe
• Asia
• Australia

Sadly, Antarctica is not an option in this game as it has been omitted from the expedition section of the game. If it does get included, then Antarctica is the 7th option.

Likewise, the only dinosaurs that have multiple locations would then be:

• Stegosaurus (North America and Europe)
• Ceratosaurus (North America and Europe)
• Parasaurolophus (North America and Asia)
• Dilophosaurus (North America and Asia)

The Stegosaurus, Ceratosaurus, and Parasaurolophus have their fossils distributed in two different continents, so this would allow them to be paired with dinosaurs from either location. Dilophosaurus is the special case here as her fossils are exclusively found in Asia and not in North America. I think this dinosaurs should still have a location Bonus in both North America and Asia as the Dilophosaurus is well recognized as a North American dinosaur, but her fossils are exclusively in Asia. This could be because the Dilophosaurus is very similar to the Sinosaurus, and that the Asian location was very lacking in a variety of dinosaurs when the game first launched. So, the compromise would have to have the Dilophosaurus be both a North American dinosaur to be scientifically more accurate, and an Asian one as well match her fossil location.

Despite these dinosaurs being in multiple continents, they would only get a single boost in compatibility rating if they are housed with dinosaurs from their multiple locations.

-------------------------------------------

To determine the size of the compatibility rating bonus, each one of these factors would provide a point to the compatibility rating bonus. If the dinosaur has one point, they would get a bonus of 5% from their base rating, 2 points would give them a bonus of 15% from their base rating, and 3 points would give them a bonus of 30% from their base rating. These points are only derived once for each factor (family, time period, and location) and would require the all 3 factors to get the 30% boost to the base rating. Here are some examples:

Exhibit A:
4 Triceratops (no bonus)

There will be no bonus as the triceratops are by themselves.

Exhibit B:
5 Triceratops (5% bonus)
7 Muttaburrasaurus (5% bonus)

There will be a bonus of 5% as the dinosaurs both shared the same time period

Exhibit C:
4 Triceratops (15% Bonus)
8 Edmontosaurus (15% Bonus)

There will be a bonus of 15% as the dinosaurs both shared the same location and time period

Exhibit D:
4 Triceratops (5% Bonus)
6 Stegosaurus (30% Bonus)
4 kentrosaurus (15% Bonus)

The triceratops has a 5% bonus as it shares the same location with the stegosaurus.
The Stegosaurus has a 30% bonus as it shares the same location with the triceratops, and also shares the same time period and family with the kentrosaurus.
The Kentrosaurus has a 15% bonus as it shares the same family and time period as the stegosaurus.

Exhibit E:
4 Triceratops (30% Bonus)
8 Nasutoceratops (30% Bonus)
4 Troodon (15% Bonus)

Both Nasutoceratops and Triceratops share the same family, location, and time period, so they get the 30% bonus.
The Troodon would only get a 15% bonus as they share the same location and time period as the ceratopsids.

Exhibit F:
5 Stegosaurus (15% Bonus)
2 Dilophosaurus (15% Bonus)
1 Crichtonsaurus (5% Bonus)

The Stegosaurus and Dilophosaurus both share the same time period and location, so they get a 15% bonus.
The Crichtonsaurus only gets a bonus of 5% as is also shares the same location as the Dilophosaurus’ fossil location.

Exhibit G:
3 Dreadnoughtus (15% Bonus)
2 Carnotaurus (30% Bonus)
4 Herrerasaurus (15% Bonus)

The dreadnoughtus gets a bonus of 15% as she shares the same location as the carnivores, and the same time period as the carnotaurus. She is not related to either of them.
The carnotaurus gets a bonus of 30% as it shares the same location as both of these dinosaurs, is related to the herrerasaurus, and shares the same time period as the dreadnoughtus.
The Herrerasaurus gets a bonus of 15% as she shares the same location as both dinosaurs, and is related to the carnotaurus. She does not share the same time period as the other two species.

-------------------------------------------

HYBRID COMPATIBILITY

Hybrids would get a special case in base rating. These dinosaurs are manmade amalgamations that did not exist in the past. They have no location, natural families, or time periods that they would benefit from. What they would however get is a special compatibility rating based on if they are housed with their ingredient dinosaurs, which will be 10% for one ingredient dinosaur, and 25% if they are housed with both. The ingredient dinosaur would treat these hybrids as if they share a family, so they won’t get a unique boost like the hybrids.

Here are some examples:

Exhibit A:
1 Ankylodocus (0% Bonus)
2 Brachiosaurus (15% Bonus)
5 Stegosaurus (15% Bonus)

The Ankylodocus does not get any bonus in compatibility as neither of her ingredient dinosaurs share the exhibit with her.
The Brachiosaurus and Stegosaurus both get a bonus of 15% from their base rating as they both share the same location and time period.

Exhibit B:
1 Indominus rex (10% Bonus)
4 Velociraptors (5% Bonus)

Since the indominus rex is housed with one of her ingredient dinosaurs, she gets a 10% bonus. As the velociraptor only sees her as a compatible family species, she gets 5, but nothing else as they never shared a location and time period naturally.

Exhibit C:
1 Ankylodocus (25%)
2 Diplodocus (15%)
3 Ankylosaurus (15%)

The Ankylodocus gets a bonus of 25% as both of her ingredient dinosaurs are housed with her.
The Ankylosaurus and Diplodocus get a 15% boost. Despite not being related to each other directly, they do see the ankylodocus as a compatible family species. That, and they both originated from North America. None of the dinosaurs are compatible by time period, so no one gets a time period boost.

Exhibit D:
1 Stegoceratops (25%)
2 Triceratops (30%)
5 Stegosaurus (30%)
4 Iguanodon (15%)

The stegoceratops gets a hybrid compatibility boost of 25% as both of her ingredient dinosaurs are present.
The Triceratops and stegosaurus both get a boost of 30% as she is related to the stegoceratops, shares the same time period as the Iguonodon (as it lived in both the Jurassic and Cretaceous Period), and the same location as each other.
The Iguanodon gets a bonus of 15% as she shares the same time period with both stegosaurus and triceratops, and shares the same location as the stegosaurus. As she is not related to any of these dinosaurs, she will not get a bonus that reached 30%.

Exhibit E (combat has been turned off):
1 Indominus rex (10%)
1 Indoraptor (25%)
1 velociraptor (5%)

This is the special case scenario and really complicated. As the indoraptor is a hybrid of another hybrid, it would make sense if the indoraptor sees the indominous rex as an ingredient dinosaur, so it gets a boost of 25% because both indominus rex and velociraptor are housed with each other. The indominus rex only sees the velociraptor as an ingredient dinosaur, so it does not see the indoraptor as the same way. The velociraptor only ever shares a family view with both and nothing else, so it only gets a 5% boost. Regardless, this is confusing and could go in any way, but they will kill each other if combat is not set to off, so these dinosaurs could not coexist despite the DNA connection.

-------------------------------------------

And this is basically what I have in mind. The idea is to have another strategy in terms of housing dinosaurs together to get a higher star rating with certain combinations. This will be great as it invites players to think of combinations that could work if space is an issue. Likewise, the payoff would be amazing if they could give dinosaurs a high compatibility rating bonus as well as a paleobotany bonus. Making dinosaur management just as interesting in trying different combinations of plants and dinosaurs to get the highest rating park as possible.

As an example, if you have a park with all the dinosaur base rating equaling that to 1200, depending on how you house them, you could get a theoretical bonus in compatibility rating of 60, 180, or 360! All depending on who you house your dinosaurs with whom.

Please let me know what you think!
