A Puzzler involving Rift, SteamVR and Elite Dangerous.

So there is this program called OpenVrDesktopDisplayPortal that lets you overlay any window you want into Steam VR games, it's pretty sweet.
Problem is Using the rift Elite dangerous seems to direct draw or something to the rift and the SteamVR Compositor does not display Elite Dangerous in the mirror at all, just the SteamVR room.
Now there is one person who reportedly just has it working "it just works" and no one has any clue why (not even OVRDDP dev).
Here are some videos of his process

and filmed through his phone camera

Only two things I can think of are:
1. Guy has Horizons and I don't (can't afford it atm)
2. He's using a ReShade profile/setting that the rift can't support.

I grabbed reshade my self but have not messed with the settings on it yet because I have no idea what to do with it other than make sure it loads in E:D (it does)

Anyone got any ideas?

I tried that thing in my vive and all I can say it's just not worth the hassle.
Not even with the vive where it works quite easily.
The displays just don't have enough resolution to do small windows. In fact you can fill the whole hmd with nothing but a desktop display and you still wouldn't be able to read websites without having zooming like crazy on text.

Try the bigscreen beta now available in the rift store and see how big or close you need to be just read regular text.

It's just easier ton take the thing off.

While Test driving it in the SteamVr Room it worked fine for me, I had it set so the window expands when I look at it just like the E:D Consoles and text is perfectly legible for me.
Big Screen beta is not at all going to fill the need that OVRDDP can.

I know bigscreen is completely different
I only mention it as an easy way to test how little desktop type windows etc work in vr.
We just dont have the screen resolution in the panels.

Especially now that bigscreen is a native oculus app as well.

The only hope I think we have is if someone hacks the Oculus Debug Tool. It's the only app capable of displaying something within the Rift while playing a game in VR.

Debug tool hack would be cool for Oculus Home games, but I'm talking about SteamVR. But the videos I posted is the only known instance of this app working with Elite Dangerous and Oculus rift, no idea why.

Well if one program can do it then it is definitely possible to do.
I'm not saying I have half a clue of how personally but it is doable.

Well for some reason when I have vorpx enabled, Elite Dangerous shows up in the SteamVR mirror. Elite Dangerous looks like garbage in the rift though when I do that. Just kind of hoping that this little bit of information can help the local wizards figure out how to get this overlay going for Rift users.

Are there any updates to this? For whatever reason Elite just draws straight to my rift instead of to SteamVr first. I'd guess it's probably faster that way, but it would be really nice to be able to use the SteamVR overlay while in game.

I use it quite often with my vive when doing trading to view netflix while in VR.

Maybe your Rift/Vive is not in DirectMode if you don't see the mirrored window? Also you need to start up OVRDDP after elite (and you can start it also multiple times if you want to mirror multiple windows). Also check that the mirror-position is not behind you, then you also won't see the mirrored display, (i.e. just wander a little bit around your position to see if the mirror is not hanging somewhere in the room.

If I remember I can post my T9-settings for Netflix for OVRDDP this evening.

Overall keep the window you mirror small, it's quite expensive to mirror as it needs to "screenshot" and then upload it to the GPU for every frame. May mirrored window size is below 720 to maintaine 20FPS (of the mirror-window not the game itself). I think I'm somewhere at 700x500.

It's not that I can't see the OVRDDP window, I can't see anything SteamVR related at all. The SteamVR overlay doesn't show up or anything. I can see it in the steamVR monitor, but not in my headset. Also, when loading, I can see my view flip from the SteamVR roomspace to the Oculus roomspace.
