Engineers A question about data points

Not gone after these before so not sure what to expect. I need Cracked Industrial Firmware. Instruction is to get these from POI's data points. OK - so I find a POI. It has a data point - yay! It's a public one. Is that good or bad? Anyway, I sidle up in my SRV, I target it. Now what? Nothing seems to be happening. Mm - what else can I do? Do I need to scan it with my ship's scanner perhaps? Or shoot at it to break it or something? NFI. Get closer? Can't - I'm almost on top of it now. Still nothing. Oh well. Give up and go away - get beat up by FDS while cops watch. Well, that was fun!

I've looked in the various very helpful threads and sheets (thanks guys!) but while they tell you that you get these from data points they don't actually tell you how to do that. Clearly I am missing something obvious. Any advice?

You'll need to actively scan the data point after you target it. It's like using a kill warrant scanner or frame shift wake scanner: it's assigned to a trigger that you need to keep pressed until the scan finishes.

Oh really? Well, that was a bit of esoteric information. Hey thanks a lot dude - I knew there had to be something so obvious that i was missing that it would make me feel like a right noob! Job done!

You're welcome, the game often does not communicate what needs to be done in such a situation. And I can see why this is confusing... some of the other scanners work by just targeting and looking in the right direction.
