A question about exploration data time-limit

Hello, I just have a quick question, as I was unable to find this information anywhere. Is there a time limit to exploration data loss, or anything else which can affect it, except death? I have been exploring in deep space for almost two years now, and I realized maybe I should have asked this vital piece of information before setting out on such a trip. Would be sad if I returned home and found out I lost most of my data, since I plan to stay out here for another couple of years probably, unless data IS lost after a time, then I will just go back I guess and make shorter trips. =/

So long as you don't die you're fine. My last big trip was over 18 months, it was all there, it doesn't go out of date.

The only thing that may go "Out of date" is first discoveries. If you're the first to scan something but you're no the first to turn it in you will lose the tag. Exploration data never goes out of date.

I imagine this bearded, tatty suited Commander, in a ship (what is it by the way?) stripped of all it's paint, not really aware of what is happening anywhere else in the Galaxy.
How about a quick resumé of you and your ship's general well-being and a bit about where you have been?
Have you ever met anyone out there during the two years? I think six months was my longest, and I did try to meet up a couple of times.

Two years out? Good grief, that's a lot of time. Congrats! If I were you, I'd go to one of the new asteroid bases and sell my data. It doesn't really feel the same as the inhabited regions (the old and the new bubble), after all. This way, if something befell you, you wouldn't lose la couple of years' worth of exploration data.

Welp, didn't check this thread after I got the answer of data not dying. Sorry.

I'm flying an ASP explorer, with about 30LY jump range. I don't really know where the asteroid bases are, but I do not think there are any nearby me. I never tried to meet up, no, too afraid of space pirates who like to destroy explorers just for fun, so i'm playing in solo mode. But the patch that brought in multicrew allowed me to return to civilized space at least in spirit as a gunner for a friend, or them keeping me company during some exploration sessions.

Truth be told, I am so long in unexplored space because I just don't have a lot of time to play, so it is not exactly my choice. Originally, I expected I would be back within one year maximum but that keeps extending.

But it is like one said yes, I am pretty much completely detached from what happens in the civilized Galaxy, it is only me and the stars out there and my ASP already starts feeling an old piece of junk, considering I don't have any of the engineers upgrades, but is all I have so I have to do with it until I get back. Someday.

Yeah.. which is funny, because I have never actually seen a lot of complains about the interface.. and IMHO, trying to be completely objective as ED improved a lot of interfaces for other stuff.. this one is definitely the worst and truly sucks.. it's damn slow and designed purely

That's a good long trip. Can I ask how many systems you've visited? How many ELW's?
I'm gearing up for another long trip. I'm getting the exploration itch again. My last trip was 18 months to the day. I felt like i was pushing fate and luck towards the end though.
I might try 2 years this time.
I've got a few more light weight mods to do but right now I've got just under 54LYs on my asp exp. So when you do get back check out the engineers.

Nope, nowhere near any of those outposts.
I don't actually know about how many systems I visited XD As for ELWs I guess you mean Earth Like Worlds? I do bump into those every now and then. Much more water worlds, though, those seem to be more common.

I got the exploration jitters yesterday and checked into Medusa's Rock after a bit of poking around the Orio-Persean Gap, just to offload the data and make sure I at least got first dibs on a couple of unexplored systems. I've a choice now - head back towards the Elephant's Trunk, seems there's still a lot to explore round there, or push on further out towards (according to EDSM's galaxy map) the "Perseus Crags" for a few weeks.

It's a feature of the exploration gameplay loop I've not seen much discussed, but I find there's a real tension builds up when you've been gone a while - wondering if anyone else has scanned those lovely virgin systems and is heading for home now while I'm still out here, light years away from any possibility of cashing them in.

The tension certainly builds when you've been out for a long time. I even had some bad dreams.
As far as loosing systems yeah it crossed my mind from time to time but overall it's not much to worry about. If your on a long trip there's nothing you can do about it anyways. (I RP my trips as in if I stop at any station that would effectively end the trip) I discovered over 120 ELW's and only ended up loosing 2 during the 18 month trip. One was close to the bubble and the other was quite far out in a neutron field.
I also discovered one ~ 60LYs from Sag A that was undiscovered. After all the traffic around there I was thrilled to hang my name on that one.
It's a big galaxy out there.

I only lost 2 months of data when I hit a neutron star just recently (Distracted flying [blah]).

Felt pretty awful after that, can't imagine if I had years of data.

Your my new hero. Do you realize that your going to be famous in the world of Elite. Might even get some notoriety outside of Elite. All you have to do is make it back and turn in all that data. Your probably going to have visited the most systems, most ELW's and right on down the list. What an amazing feat. This may end up being one of the biggest "do it your way"moments ever in Elite by anyone. I surely do look forward to your return. Ide bet good money Im not the only one that thinks that.

Absolutely! He's grizzled with a beard because he hasn't shaven in months or years, his REMLOK suit probably smells like a landfill, and he speaks in giberish. He puts in at dock to sell his data and walks into local lounge popular with pilots and CMDRs, and the whole place goes instantly silent. Everyone knows what he does for a living, and everyone knows what he's here to do.
