If you have read them, would you say they have added to your game experience?

For me they had added a deeper play immersion. Because now, I know how is living in the Empire, why the Soontil relics are a mithic rare item, and so on. Things that really aren't needed to play, but enrich your game experience.

Most of the books are very good and if you like space operas, worth the reads. Standalone, they are great. I would start with Drew Wagar's free Oolite series as they do a great job of bridging (unofficially) the discrepancies in the original Elite universe and the ED universe.

I didn't find all of the books as a whole added much to the game play, though. For one, FDEV changed lore after some were published resulting in inconsistencies. For example, the Imp Courier is supposed to be big and bad - the Imp FDL. More importantly, I often found my self back playing the game and wishing for the intensity portrayed in the books.

Some do and some feel a little generic. Here's my top ten list;-

1= Elite : Reclamation - Drew Wagar
1= Lave: Revolution - Allen Stroud
3. Elite Anthology : Tales from the Frontier - 15 Short Stories from many authors organised by Chris Booker
4. Mostly Harmless - Kate Russell
5. Legacy - Michael Brookes
6. Out of the Darkness - T. James (Interesting one that has thargoids but don't know if the Cannon's been retconned).
7. Docking is Difficult - Gideon Defoe (Really enjoyed it until the last couple of chapters, otherwise it would be higher on the list)
8. Wanted - Gavin Deas
9. Nemorensis - Simon Spurrier (Not one to read to the kids as a bed time story but the idea behind it is interesting)
10. Elite : And here the wheel - John Harper (Space Kilts).

I haven't finished Premonition so far which I'm really enjoying it as an Elite Fanboi, not sure it would work without the emotional investment I have in E : D though. If it keeps up the then it might be the new number 3 book ;-)

But if you get the Chance, listen to the Audio Books. Those are amazing.

I like sc fi and read a hell of a lot, read only one book in this series and i would list it in my top ten worse ever reads, and has put me off reading any of the others. Docking is Dangerous was the title and it didn't enhance Elite but rather made it a joke, suitable for prepubescent was my final decision after reading the last page and forever deleting it from my device.

As the Author is famous for the The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists Books, Juvenile humor was expected. ;-) Don't let it put you off the other ones higher in that list.
