You get the benefits without pledging. You need to buy in Torval Space, but you can sell anywhere (best price usually ALD or Dechaine).

You get the Torval trade bonus if you are pledged and rank 2+ IIRC.
Because Torval opens up Imperial Slaves everywhere she controls, Supply goes through he roof (lots of Fed Citizens jump at the chance to be indentured servants rather than homeless I guess), and thus price drops to very cheap and stays there. So this is what is making it feel like a global bonus.
The trade bonus is on profits, so thus, on top of the demand profits. I honestly don't know why traders have not gone nuts to support Torval, because that 5% goes up and up the higher Torval get's in the ratings. Yet Torval struggles.

I believe you have a moral obligation to join her or remain powerless. I joined torval after learning I was always flying in her space. At the moment, she is in dire need of help.
About the bonuses. If you get rank in her power you get additional trade bonuses. I think from rank 1 to 3 you get and additional 5% to 15% bonus to all trades in her controlled systems.

I didn't pledge to her and I was buying slaves for cheap within her control systems.
Yes, Imperial Slaves in her control systems are the cheapest I've ever found because of the 10% discount on Imperial Slaves - no pledge needed. And, in nearby Archon Delaine systems, the black market price is quite high. Expect profit for such trades to be around 3500 to 4500 per ton.

People here mix up two things:

There are two key benefits, the reduced Imperial Slave prices in ZT controlled systems, and a profit bonus for selling in ZT exploited systems. The first is available to everyone, the second only to pledgers, but 5% of profits in ZT systems isn't great IMO. Its similar with Archon in that the 10% bonus on selling illegal goods is open to everyone.
So you only get the bonus if both ends of your trade run are in her space? I can't find clarification anywhere.
You only get the 5% trade voucher on profits if you sell in Torval space and are pledged to Torval at Rating 2.
