A question and hello!

Having played Elite II and III (and I have vague memories of Elite on our first computer) I lept at the chance to support this game and am so darn happy its got off the ground. Fanboy squee aside a few questions.

In Elite II there was two very vague factions the Federation and Empire, assuming that this game takes place in the same universe, will those two factions still be around? If so I assume they would be more involved and be factions rather than just names.

Will the universe be as vast as the one of Elite II? In Elite II it seemed to span our entire visible galaxy it seemed, a friend and I once jumped all the way to YV Canis Majoris (fuel scoop and a big old transport ho!) because at school we'd read about this absolutely massive star that had been found and was intrigued.

sorry if these have been brought up before or answered elsewhere.

Hello!

In general terms:

We don't know about factions, but it wouldn't be unreasonable to think there might be some.

We think the galaxy might be massive, but we haven't had anything official from DB or FD about it.

There's alot we don't know yet ;)

Thanks for the reply, and I guess we'll just have to find out about the goings on as this game glides towards us in the future :)

I believe that the Federation, the Empire and the Alliance are all confirmed.
I cannot remember where I read that, though - there's too much stuff (and dross) to trawl through.

DB has mentioned The Empire and Federation and Alliance when talking about ED but he may have been just talking to make an example of how civilized space is divided.
It will be set 50 years after FFE so it will be interesting to see what has happens.

In terms of galaxy size, so far I've heard:

  1. Over 100 billion stars
  2. They're going to try and model our galaxy accurately, within reason [so 200-400 billion stars is possible
Whatever we end up with, it'll be plenty massive

I missed this myself before, but the main KS page says:

Our galaxy. Its an awe inspiring, beautiful, vast place; with billions of star systems, planets, moons and asteroid fields just waiting to be explored, and exploited. The triumverate superpowers of the Empire, Federation and Independents dominate their core system volumes and constantly skirmish to outmaneouver one another on their frontiers. Outside their influence, in the vast majority of the galaxy, anarchy reigns supreme and spectacular discoveries await the bold.

I don't see why the ED universe should be smaller than the one in FE2 - If it could be done on a 16-bit computer with a few megs of memory then I'm sure it can be done today.

I rather liked the Empire/Federation thing too. It meant you had to think carefully if you wanted to follow a neutral path & just do your own thing.
The 'bombing runs' were fun too. :)

Massive does not even cover it! 200 - 400 billion stars...my god...its full of them!
