A quick guide to those interested in mining.

Location is key! Find a system with a planet with a ring that's pristine and its metallic. Next shoot for only 3 ore types. Platinum, palladium and gold. Train yourself! Mining is tedious I will agree with most, but with a little practice you can easily snag the bits with little effort and down the time between scoopings. Where to aim. Watch the asteroid you plan on shooting. Watch how it spins (if it does at all) on its axis.Try to align yourself so its spinning horizontally on its axis in relation to your current position (make sure its spinning round and round, not end over end). Aim for the center. This usually causes the chipped off bits to slowly float towards you.

Only go for 25-30% or better ore. Ignore the rest. In a pristine ring there is thousands of asteroids, so find a good one and ignore the small percentages. Fit a refinery with at least 4 bins. That way you got room for your money making ore and a spare bin for junk. This is so you spend less time constantly ejecting waste ore in favor of the stuff you want. Fit good thrusters. Good thrusters makes you more maneuverable. Meaning less time collecting ore if you accidentally push it away from you.

Fit defense! Haulers are a no! Cobra and the Asp are good choices. You'll absoultly need shields! You will be bumping into asteroids and skidding off them from time to time, so a shield will save you needless repair costs. Also weapons so you can chase off NPC pirates that will occasionally pester you. Lasers are good for dropping shields. After that its your choice. Missiles and multi cannons make short work of them (personally I like cannons because well... CANNONS!). Fit a shield cell bank, point defense and chaff! Some NPC's will shoot missiles so you'll want the point defense to deal with that. Also some NPC Cobra's will shoot dumbfire missiles. So the shield cell bank will save you if they land a luck shot.

A Cobra with 36 cargo will net you around 400-500k with a mix of gold palladium and platinum, or in upwards of 700-800k with a load of platinum and palladium. An Asp will be in the millions if you fill her up (currently mine only has 48 cargo as I am still fitting her out) Time to mine. It will vary depending on how often you get the good percentages. My times are around two hours for a full load. Granted it doesn't compare to trading, but its more engaging and will pay well if you take the time to get better at it.

Good luck and see you all on the rock pile!
