a quick idea to prevent ramming as a combat technique

Do equal damage to both ships. so if you are in an equal ship and you destroy the other, you yourself will be destroyed, same with smaller vs larger. larger vs smaller would be balanced by increased difficulty in hitting.

not perfect, but would lower the instance of losers ramming you.

I don't get this at all.

First you are proposing that equal ships do equal damage - not with standing relative momentums, shield strength, pips in systems, etc?

Then you suggest that "same with smaller vs larger" (?) but go on to say that it would be balanced by difficulty in hitting. Well yes...it is hard to ram a sidewinder in an anaconda. Not too tough to ram an anaconda in a sidewinder though...if you want to...

Anyhow, I don't really get what you're driving at here to be honest.

Ramming WOULD be a combat technique if it weren't a crapshoot that only damages one of the ships half the time due to local collision detection in the game.

Why? Ramming seems like a perfect last ditch effort to enforce a draw, so to speak. And really, damage wise it doesn't matter if you get hit by a pile thats vaguely ship shaped, or, you know, just a pile.

It's a perfectly valid combat technique so there's no problem to be solved.

Ramming is a combat technique. If players want to gamble potential destruction in the vain hopes to removes another players shields so they can't use shield cell batteries they can.

a smaller ship hitting a larger ship would be destroyed if damage was equal whereas a larger ship wouldnt even be able to hit a small ship.

at the moment ramming damage is broken anyway. i was in a cobra with a4 shields and full pips and was destroyed by a cobra raming me who survived it. perhaps my idea could be a temp solution until collision damage is fixed.

There is a revenge tactic used: when your ship is just about done, and you can't win the fight fairly, the ram your ship to take their opponent with them. It's childish and spiteful, but that's the world we live in. Dodge them. The galaxy doesn't care.

That was the blunt answer, but I do have sympathy. It's a mean spirited, churlish thing to do. That doesn't mean FD should do anything about it. PvP brings out the worst in people, and PvP can attract the worst people. It's ugly, but you just have to grin and bear it.

Nothing wrong with the mechanics of ramming. Learn to dodge.

If you are shooting me and I throw my Type 9 at you for lack of bullets, surely it is only fair? If you don't manage to get out of the way, then my cause was just! (or your thrusters were offline)

Nope, daft idea, sorry, there is nothing wrong with ramming as a combat method, why shouldnt you be able to?

no it isnt , its full of cheese and requires minimal skill.

Yes, ramming is a legit combat tactic. Even the Romans used it in their ships.

And I'd say it requires more skill than getting close to someone then spaffing the contents of your dumbfire launcher at them.

If this is indeed the case then something is amiss.

If your shields were healthy AND you had 4 pips in Sys AND it was indeed an A4 shield AND it was indeed cobra vs cobra then it should be an equal result at worst, and you winning at best.
