A quick search of the forum and I stumbled across this and just wanted to share

I was curious how long it takes for the datapoint at a fixed base to reset and the first post I came across in my search was a story of someone having trouble , both with the scan mission and controlling their SRV.

The reason for sharing this now was that among the comments that followed was this one...

To make the SRV much more controllable, take all the pips off engines. Also, you have much more stability and you can climb steeper if you go backwards, so if ever you need to run away from something, always go backwards.

.. and I had to laugh because it immediately put me in mind of an old film called Kelly's Heroes..

(In particular, the first few seconds of the following clip)

For the sake of clarifiying potential mis-information I should point out that:

a) although removing ENG pips may tend to slow you down a bit (and thus reduce your tendency to spin out), it also dramatically reduces the amount of boost you have available which can be vital in getting yourself out of tricky situations

b) having spent a fair bit of time trying to go up steep slopes I'm not convinced that going backwards actually gives you that much of an edge (although I'm happy to be proven wrong) and it certainly makes it harder to see/avoid obstacles in your path (although that didn't stop my aunt from frequently using the technique when navigating Scottish hills in her mini cooper)

:p

Thanks for clarifying. I should have done that myself. It was just the concept of getting out of trouble at least as quick as you got into it and the memory that it triggered.
