A Sandbox Game

I would really love the ability to play a sandbox game using only the original systems from the original game of the 80's.

Does anyone else think it would be a good idea?

I am not sure what you mean about the original systems in the old Elite. As far as I remember there were just as many stars in the galaxy back then (billions), and there were even more than one galaxy which is more than we have now.

Each star had exactly one planet I think.

Nearly all of this was procedurally generated as it was difficult to fit much in to 64 k memory :)

Thanks

To be honest, I have never heard of it. I'll take a look, thank you.

The reason I asked about original systems is that I think ED has really caught the feel of the original (and it is still in beta). I think it would be lovely to start at Lave using this game engine.

Try a search for Lave in the galaxy map... or look in the sector marked 'old worlds'.

And

Check out Allen Stroud's book...

Well Lave, Diso, Leesti, Zaonce etc are all in their correct, original positions on the galaxy map. Search for "Lave" and the map will bring you there :) They're in the region of space marked as "Old Worlds" on the map, which I grinned when I first saw it. If you look at the map top-down and rotate it with Lave at the centre, you can see the other systems in their original locations.

I have a screenshot at the Steam site of this actually. See below:

ps: Yeah I'll be visiting Lave when ED is released too :D I plan on making an "undocking and trade run" video for my friend ... we both played Elite when we were kids when it first came out. I'm sure he'll be awestruck at seeing the "modern" version of undocking from Lave and flying to Leesti or Diso for the first trade run :D

Why is it so important to play with only the original systems from the old 80's game?

I do not see the appeal and I do not understand why that should be important at all. ED is even in this beta stage already a billion times more interesting.
ED is going to be everything I wished I had in the 80's. I am nostalgic about Elite, but not like that.

Ah Nostalgia, it's not like it used to be ;)

There was a certain 'magic' in those old Elite planet names - if I could've named a planet in E: D, I'd have chosen one of them.

GREAT! Maybe they should also add an GFX filter then give us back the old wireframe look?

I'd like to see it the other way around: an Easter egg that emulates the original 8-bit gameplay, including the hand-coded missions but with the ED graphics engine. Imagine the "sun is going nova" mission with the current star and planet graphics. I don't care how scientifically impossible it is, it would look amazing.

That sounds like yet another veiled swipe at a game that you seem to be finding less appealing as time slips by.

I really hope you do get what you want out of the game but there is a lot of truth in the saying that a person can be their own worst enemy.

In your thread about little genuine news being in the recent newsletters you came across as very negative.

Don't talk yourself into not liking the game because it isn't as yet living up to your expectations or you could find yourself convincing yourself the game is not for you when it is not yet finished.

In fact from DB's vision it never really will be finished.
