I wanted to share an experience with you all that left me out of breath and hands shaking.
So, I’ve made it past the 20th hour of gameplay and getting to grips with pretty much most of the game however still learning everyday. At the time I was flying an Adder with the basic load out I’ve since upgraded to the Cobra Mk3. I am mostly a bounty hunter.
I was visiting my first resource extraction site as I usually camp Nav Points. I was very impressed with the activity going on in the area, ships, mining, Police patrolling, fellow bounty hunters and of course what I was looking for: Pirates!
The stream of wanted pirates was flowing at a good pace making 5-20k cr one after the other and then I saw in the distance an Anaconda tackling 4 or 5 authority ships. Now, I have to say I had learned my lesson against taking on Anacondas on my own as I remember more poor little sidey getting annihilated by one in my 2nd hour of game play, this one though was being attacked by a gang of ships. I kept back at about 2km from the Anaconda my K warrant scanning it to see if the pilot had outstanding bounty elsewhere, it’s shields were almost down when all of a sudden the Anaconda’s thrusters boosted and caused the ship to plough head on into me thus taking his shields of line and my shields in need of some TLC.
Much to my surprise I was not instantly targeted and my little adder blown of the face of the galaxy. I sat back waiting for the opportune moment as it’s hull was slowly penetrated by the little flies with lasers buzzing around it. I had a quick look at the Anaconda’s subsystems and it’s cargo bar was down to 30% integrity. This was the moment, my shields were at full charge now so I transferred all power to weapons and fired off a volley of laser fire into the Anacondas cargo bay.
Targets shields back online, is what my computer just said to me and moments after that the gigantic ship in front of me stops firing for a moment and turns towards me. I see nothing but a mixture of red and blue light. Taking damage, Shields offline. I frantically weave the tiny Adder left and right setting half my energy to shields and the other half to engines and go full throttle in the opposite direction while rolling and strafing desperately trying to stay alive.
I notice the Anaconda’s hull is now at 9% and Cargo bay at 8% This next decision was the most important one I had so far as a bounty hunter in this vast universe.
Full power to weapons! I swung around and lined myself up with this tyrant who was about to be my grim reaper and gave it all I had. My alpha strike of laser fire had left it’s hull at 2% my cockpits glass has started to crack my hull’s integrity failing. I am sat there almost helpless waiting for my weapons to recharge. A final exchange of laser fire will seal the fate of either me or this pirate.
A huge explosion roars through the system as debris is hurtling passed me at every angle my cockpits canopy is breached. The horror sinks in, I am in the middle of nowhere the next station is more than 15 minutes away and I have less than 5 minutes of available oxygen left. I panic, setting maximum power to engines, disengage my weapons and hit my Frame shift drive. It takes a few moments to charge up and then I am in super cruise.
4 minutes remaining. Going as fast I can, heading towards the nearest station I know I’m not going to make it. Ok now stop… think… I try to calm down and think of the alternatives. Got it, I’ll jump to an adjacent system, one that has a nearby station from the nav point. It has to be a station with an air lock, I don’t have time to look at the system map to locate one. I take a gamble and jump to a system that sounds familiar to me. 2 minutes of oxygen remaining.
Coming out of hyperspace I target the closest station and head towards it at full speed. Every second that ticks down fills me with even more dread to the thought of dying out here in deep space. Getting close to the system now, I come off the throttle as if I over shoot I’ll be dead for sure. Almost there with 50 seconds on the clock. I arrive the system just 9km from the station and “Yes!” it has an airlock, as soon as I come out of super cruise I go full throttle and hit boost swiftly opening my comms and request docking. “Docking requested granted”, there’s still a chance to live albeit a slim one. Hurtling full speed to reach the front of the station 20 seconds of oxygen left.
Strafing around at full speed I can see the entrance, 10 seconds left.
9, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, and I’m inside the station, oxygen restored. Thrusters off!
Just sat their drifting inside the docking area just relieved to be alive but still shocked. My hands shaking and I’m breathing as if trying to catch my breath. Pulling myself together I deploy my landing gear and head to my assigned docking bay, touching down.
I am alive!
Thanks for reading I could not do this experience justice by putting it into text.
TL DR This game is extremely immersive and is what you make of it.
