A single player holding an entire community hostage

Greetings.

I'm Karn, leader of a fleet with more than 400 members. We're active in Discord and got our own player owned faction.
Working with our BGS team, we wanted to gain full control of our assigned system. Unfortunately since about 2 months ago, this is prevented by One. Single. Player. A player that I have banned for his hostile actions against our fleet.

This stems from the simple fact that changes in BGS are based on the amount of transactions, not the value of the transactions (Which is a horrible gameplay flaw). More info here.
Because of how the BGS works, every crime he commits ingame counts as one transaction, equal to one point of influence loss. Every single kill.
Instead, countering this in an attempt to increase the system's security, killing a pirate only counts as one transaction if you go claim his bounty at the station. So while he can just around in an open space and see influence drop in real time, the effort to counter his piracy are effectively tenfold for each player of our fleet, since each player has to run back and forth between pirate locations and station.

But if that wasn't even enough.

This single player has managed to infiltrate our Discord Server with multiple accounts, using illegal tools to spy on channels he shouldn't be able to read (which he proved to us himself) and apparently he would even be able to nuke the entire server, like it has never existed. I'm not sure if that's right or not, but knowing he has used hacking tools before, I wouldn't play with the odds.

Unless we comply to his demands, my fleet, with me being the leader, are held hostage by one single player who felt like messing us up entirely.
His demands are that he regains access to my server, and in return he would stop the war against us. Even though he can't provide me any warranty, that he just won't start the war again at any time he didn't feel like we were doing what he tells us.

I think I don't need to explain to anyone how much crap this is, but here it is.
I seek advice how to deal with this situation, and I would love to have someone from Frontier help us out on this issue, since this has gone far beyond just an ingame war. It has become harrassment and blackmail against an entire community.

Well, he is prolly doing it to annoy you, and by the looks of it, he succeeded in that, no offence. Only thing I can think of is don't give it any attention and wait for it to blow over. If things stay silent, he will get bored of it and move on eventually. Sucks indeed, but since its the internets, what can you do?

It sounds like a crime against TOS has been committed. First port of call might be to write a friendly email to Brett, who can point you in the right direction over who/how to contact FD to have this checked out and resolved.

Yep, that sounds about right for the BGS. That's why I've never actively got involved with it and never will. Well, that and it has zero interest for me.

Your Discord issues are on you, though. That has nothing to do with Frontier. If he actually has tools to hack Discord, you should be reporting that to Discord admins.

*sigh* Script kiddies still exist nearly 25 years later... ugh.

have ya tried just starting again..like a new private group and discord..might sound dramatic but would be a simple yet for u as admin time consuming way to fix it..also be sure he hasn't got any little helpers ...but as to the BGS problem.....god help us all :(

There's a reason governments don't negotiate.

To beat this guy you have to outwit them. Change your goals so he cannot win - if his crimes contribute negatively then change the game.

not sure about the discord - 400 players probably mean he has sympathisers. You can lock down roles etc in discord but it doesn't prevent spying.

adapt & survive, win by changing your victory conditions.

Never appease. You cannot negotiate with a tiger when your head is in it's mouth.

Fair enough, that you come to the forum to seek advice about what to do next.

But from now on, you would do best to keep any action or tactics you and your group propose out of the forum. Sad to say, some people relish the publicity, and hate it when you go quiet. They will also be trying to 'read' your next move. It's usually best to keep your communication with Discord or FD discreet.

400 members can't take on a single CMDR? Either you need to learn how to play the BGS or give up on it.

If he's just using murder, there are counters besides bounty hunting. If you can't see past that, you should really just let it go.

Close discord server, create a Mumble server (either pay for use or set one up in your home), and forget the problem exists.

You can also try to get a hold of Discord and find out what their policy is for people that hack their service and hold people for ransom.

Ive heard this story more than once, over many different games. Let me guess, at some point he had your trust and was given access to passwords or whatever it takes (not familiar with Discord) to be able to mess with such things. Even if not, he has no power other than that you give him. Shut down your server, or give it to him, and start a new one; lessons hopefully learned. As for in game (which is in fact an entirely different situation in practical terms, even if it doesn't feel that way to you), you have four hundred people. You should easily be able to counter him (even with the disparity built into the BGS) with minimal effort by just a portion of your members.

I'd like to hear the assailant's side of the story as well, guessing much is being left out.

See if that L33t hacker threatening your discord server will fall for this:

If this is true and if you have proof for it, you should consider legal actions against that person.

As a server admin of our Counter Strike Source Clan (some years ago) I have been in a similar situation. The red line was crossed beginning with DDoS to our clans web and community server. Some not so difficult research with help of the attackers internet provider lead to the real name, IP address lead to the city, a call to cities government and paying a small fee gave the address. A call to a specialized lawyer made the rest and the attacker had some (minor) costs but also and more important a good lesson not thinking to be smarter than others.

What you describe above is considered as a crime.
