Well... that changes a lot of things for my novel I have been working on for at least 11yrs... so thats the 4th reboot due to martian projects lol

I wouldn't bet my money on that. Such concepts are pretty usual and the schedules are always way to optimistic. ..
Just remember the early 1980's when they said there will be Moonbases and Lunar touristic before 2k??

Habital space station around Mars in 12 years?! No chance whatsoever. It's laughable that anyone would believe that. 6 months there and 6 months back, ie x1 trip per year. Does anyone really think that we could put a space station in orbit around Mars in just 12 trips?

Colour me VERY skeptical. That's simply way too expensive and risky. Besides, I've heard that the American congress wasn't very happy with NASA's habit to burn through funds without presenting valid technical solutions, consistent plan, and clear roadmap for mission. It looks like there are too many improvisations going on behind the scene.

Space agencies around the world should focus onto establishing permanent base on the Moon: to me, this looks like only logical step forward. Leave Mars to automatic probes and landers for the time being, and let's not try to bite more than we can chew :)

It could be done much quicker by building the whole station in an orbit around Earth THEN moving it to Mars. This would only require one trip.

Hah, at least this time 'artist's impression' isn't some kind of sci-fi UFO looking thing. This can be the real thing...now, let's read what does the actual words say :D

I read the article by Lockheed Martin just after typing that. My bad...However, I'm still skepticle on the time-frame. We're not at the point of sending a manned mission there let alone a wacking great space station. There's no way their first trip to Mars would be in a space station. Any number of things could go wrong. They just wouldn't do something so risky on their first attempt. Think of the cost of this space station - you're talking billions of pounds. We still don't know how to tackle the radiation yet. The ISS is protected by the Earths magnetic field but a space station to Mars wouldn't have that. When people write these articles they always overestimate the time it'll take. A cheaper, safer, manned mission to Mars would definely happen before they risk sending a space station. I think it'll happen eventually, but no way in 12 years.
