A suggestion to help strengthen FD's position in the fight against combat logging.

Now it's probably been suggested before... But I personally have not seen such a thread so I'll add my word here.

I'm fully aware that Frontier is not of an inclination to share how they deal with combat logging. This is fine. This thread is based off a certain degree of speculation on my part, albeit reasoned speculation.

I suspect it's a fairly reasonable suspicion to have, to think Frontier has to be very careful with how they enforce combat logging. At the moment, "My Internet is bad", does sound like an appeal that's difficult to argue with.

So, as I discussed with a fellow poster in a popular thread on the PvP board, I suggest FD implements a "minimum network requirement" for Open.

I will not get into the details of how it could work, but some of the better educated on this forum believe such a mechanism is not only plausible, but easily implemented.

The proposal is that upon selecting Open in the menu, the game somehow checks whatever it needs to check on your network. (ping?) And if your network falls short of FD's pre-determined requirements, you will swiftly be returned to the main menu.

This might allow Frontier to take a stronger stance. After all, it essentially means that you cannot both play in Open AND have a bad Internet connection, at the same time. It gives genuine loggers less to hide behind.

Of course, this network requirement check should not apply to Private Groups. I'm not suggesting that bad lines should be barred from interaction completely... But it might not be a bad idea to block said lines from the "anything goes" mode. The blunt reality is, after all, that nobody actually cares if you disconnected in PG or Solo, save for a few zealots who are, in my humble opinion, beyond reason.

Is this a draconian suggestion? Yes, it is. But do I think FD could benefit from it, the community, benefit from it?

Absolutely.

Thing is - you can have absolute blazing linerates, wonderful no-loss, latency so rapid it would shake the wig off Elvis, and the next second, you are slomping through treacle as your ISP's backhaul joins an oversubscribed trunk and everything falls to pieces for 20 minutes until the core routers work out where to link next.

because your good chinese takeaway is not available i prohibit you from ALL chinese takeaways :)

large portions of "the community"would definately NOT benifit from the above.

suggestion from me is those obsesing about CLers just chill down a lot and get on with their lives.

my internet connection is sub par but i enjoy playing in open and largely avoid PVP(combat) as i am not competitive at it.

why should i be barred from the rest of the open experience just because there is a chance of disconnect ( this usually happens to me on srv deployement, station menus and /or jumping..assume that these are high data use points in the game)

i also assume without much expertise that the strain of multiple players in an instance will also stress the connection

i paid the same money as you to play this game...so who are you or anyone else to say that my access to it should be curtailed because i live rurally in a country at the opposite side of the globe to FD?????

bad word usage tempting, but i shall refrain

No need to be tempted to use bad words, friend. This is an idea thread in a board specifically for ideas. The point is to discuss, and yes, some will disagree. They may even be right.

But an idea unexplored is not an idea at all. Just keep it civil. I'm hardly in a position to make changes. And if the ideas board is anything to go by... This thread is just hot air.

Relax.

I'd never be allowed in Open again. :(

Lol

Curse you internoots!

I posted a good solution to CLogging in that other Clogging thread on this section.

I don't know if you've read it yet, but it's worth a look, because it doesn't punish anyone, really. Lol

Riverside and I seem to be trying to keep the thread alive until FD notices it. Lol

Personally, I think competitive multiplayer games need to keep track of average latency per hour. If it goes below a minimum threshold, yes they should bar you from multiplayer until it improves. The argument for rural areas is flawed. Doesn't matter if you can't help it. People also live in places where there is no internet. They don't get to play multiplayer in games they buy even though the price is the same. It's as simple as wanting to provide a stable and positive experience for the customers who are fortunate enough to have access.

I don't see why Player A with bad ping should be ruining a bounty hunting instance for Player B because Player A lives in a area that doesn't have service that's good enough for stable play. I have periods lasting up to 2 hours where my internet goes REALLY bad. I'd accept being kicked off for that. It's ruining everyone else's good time. For Elite specifically, I'd advocate leniency.

I tend to like "draconian" options as they usually would provide the best results. Backlash would always be intense though.

Yes, and then we combine this with the mantra espoused on the PvP side that Solo and Private Groups should have less reward and no effect on BGS and CG's because "unfairness" of some sort and you get an entire group of people effectively banned from playing a game they payed for. I can't see that working out well at all. If you want this implemented then you would need to tell your fellow PvP'ers to lay off the "hiding in solo/pg" mantra because you can't combine the two! I don't really suggest doing this on a PvP forum because you might find just how nasty some internet forums can get.

Depending on the minimum connection required, I may not be able to play in open. It all depends on what is defined as an 'acceptable' internet connection.

It has been pointed out that your internet connection can suddenly slow down quite a considerable amount (happens to me quite frequently, ping usually goes up to 500 or so) and stay that way for 10-20 minutes or more. That is where this idea seems to fall flat on its face. This idea operates on the assumption that the player's internet connection will not change after the initial test. However, internet connections are constantly changing depending on a wide variety of conditions that a player may/may not have control over. While is idea seems good on the surface, it would mean that a player that has a fast enough internet connection to use open could be flagged for combat logging because they have an unreliable internet connection (it may be fast, but it also breaks faster).

I think what the minimum internet conection test you are proposing needs to test is the Reliability of the internet connection, not the speed. Unfortunately, I cannot think of a reliable way to do this (maybe someone else has an idea).

it would be draconian, exploitable and wouldn't fix the real issue which is a sorry p2p implementation. expect little change but a huge (and legitimate) outcry from sidelined customers.
https://support.frontier.co.uk/kb/faq.php?id=227

to give you an more understandable example:

suppose the new restaurant in your area (where the chinese was) is specialized in curry rice. further, suppose their curry is so truly disgusting and unbearable that it gives customers a very bad case of stomach acid. now, your suggestion is exactly like if that restaurant would give an emetic pill to each customer at the door and deny entry to anyone immediately vomiting. i can see great benefit for all!

The solution is obvious: scream at the Powers-That-Be to reimplement net neutrality and make the carrier companies adhere to their agreements and provide for open networks. American & British internets is teh suxxorz.

If Open was a pure PvP mode then you might have a case. It's not however, it's a mode where PvP might occur. Not everyone in Open is a PvPer, nor are they worried about CLers. Not a good idea to exclude people from a mode because of one small aspect that's problematic.
