A terrific day, if a little humbling.

I did some mining. First time I did so for months.

For a long time I said I couldn't be bothered to carry a prospector because reasons.

Today I bucked that trend. Loaded up all 32 tonnes of cargo in the Celestial Unicorn with limpets, mounted a prospector alongside the collector...

...

I really was living in ignorance. Holy heck did the prospector maximise my earnings! Must have made 250,000 from my final hold!

I'll never mine without one again.

Aside from this revelation, the sortie as a whole was great fun. First I mapped my system for mining in my explo' config'. It was an uninhabited system. When that was done, I landed on a small world to collect some limpet synthesis materials. Nice and fun. I like driving my SRV.

Then I returned to my home port. A nice little station, out of the way... So much so that in the last 24 hours, the only ship that has passed is my own.

Mounted the mining equipment. Laser, refinery, limpet controllers, defensive measures. went back to the mining site. spent a good hour and a half filling my hold with precious metals.

Then it was time to sell. By the time I finished mining, I was on 50% fuel. Luckily, there was a system just within range of my fuel reserves. I flew there to refuel at a station. No room for a scoop. I then proceeded back to my home port, and put the mining equipment back into storage, and replaced with a scoop, armour and MRP. I still haven't sold my ore yet.

I wanted to get the best price, and I also wanted to sell to an Imperial market. However, the nearest high tech economy that fell under Imperial jurisdiction was 90ly away. Now you see why I returned home first. It wasn't to sell, it was to get the fuel scoop.

I flew the distance needed, and the station I sold at offered great prices for all ores. Hence, 250k made.

It might be peanuts to some, but today, I felt like a miner. I felt like I was there. It was epic. It was awesome. And I can't wait for more real adventures like this.

Ha, thats it! I was thinking of re-setting my 2nd account to start as a scavenger and then become a miner. :) Its fun to scout your own rings and generally just live on the edge of civilization. :)

Oh yes, scavenging is great too. I'll happily fly around one of the many landables in my home system looking for sites, both in space & terra firma, and picking up cargo. And then, take the goods to appropriate markets so I can sell at the best price.

Who says this a pure combat game?! ;)

From my own exp. I can attest that mining without a prospector is basically a waste of time. Sadly, so is mining with one. :D Seriously, if you're looking for a metal or whatever, you better have a prospector. But compared to time spent, mining is just a time black hole. Which is wrong, as it represents the basic production, the base of economy. That said, it is very relaxing IMO.

Oh yeah, make no mistake, I didn't do this for money. Not primarily anyway. The adventure experienced was worth more than credits can count, however.

Nice story and good to see other CMDRs out there hunting for adventure not credits. That is the true reward and the spirit of the game.

I am really looking forward to the coming changes. It will make this so much more awesome. Mining is also a lot of fun, together with some friends in a wing.

Cheers and fly dangerous CMDR!

Oh no, the Op broke three of the cardinal sins of ED:

(1) He willingly performed an action that some here consider a grind - mining

(2) He did something that did not result in maximum profit for minimum effort - one must always be after the almighty CREDIT to the detriment of everything else

(3) He had FUN, that obscure action that is apparently illegal in this game as it often inhibits maximum profit and can involve grinding.

Seriously OP, well done and I am glad you posted this. Just shows that a player doesn't need his hand held or scripted events to enjoy this wonderful game !

Haha, thanks. :)

I think tomorrow I'm going to strap on the SRV, bumble around the local systems, pick up whatever I can find.

I think moving down to blue space was the right call. I should work on getting my Achenar permit I think.

I've done that. Just picked a planet, landed in the middle of nowhere, jumped in the SRV, picked a heading and just roamed for a few hours. Great fun, got to shoot some rocks, found one or two crashed ships, rolled the SRV more times than I will admit in public and had a blast. Made zero profit, didn't get any accolades or rewards for what I did, except for some mats from the rocks but in all honesty, it was more fun trying to pick up the bits.

Happy trails Commander !

Good stuff!
What were you using for your mining ship? Cobra mkIII?

Look who it is. So yes basically. :D

If we ever get a second save slot on the PC so I can run a second commander this is probably what I would end up doing with it. Keep things basic, one ship at a time and nothing bigger than an Asp, no hunting down big paying missions, just doing a bit of this and a bit of that whilst chipping out a living around the edge of the bubble.

I haven't mined in so long. Last time did it in my minerconda. It is oddly satisfying, however a bit boring in the long run, and filling my cargo hold took far longer than my resistance to do something so slow paced could hold.
Anyway, you don't do stuff because others say you should, but because you want, and you will find fun and satisfaction in whatever you feel is right for you at the time, and sometimes, that is mining.

Fly safe.

The only mining I've ever done was to unlock engineers. My mining AspX sits unused, hoping that the future upgrades to mining make it more worthwhile.
