A Theory on the 2.2 Update

Everyone is saying quite a lot about the Engineers update and Multicrew later in the season. But nobody's saying much about 2.2

I have a bit of a theory around the ship launched fighters coming. Given that have said that there will be larger cities on the planets later this season, I figure there might actually be a mission based thing where we may need small nimble fighters to take on certain task in areas the ships just can't reach simply because they're too big.

Think of attacking a large base now with the ships, sure it can be done if you already know the layout. But for the most part, especially if you need to scan anything, you will more than likely need an SRV.

Imagine a similar thing but with an actual city with huge skyscrapers and moving targets within it. If the cities are vast and tight enough, I can see us actually needing a ship like the Keelback to launch a fighter to take on a mission target I otherwise couldn't get to from the air unless I'm using something like a Sidewinder. Perhaps SRVs could do it from the ground but maybe the target is a fighter itself and is far too fast for it.

In space I feel fighters will more than likely be out matched be even something as small as the Sidey in every way and will just be viewed as fun little toys. But on the surface especially if cities are involved where flying at high speed in a ship in just plain not possible they could prove far more important. Much the same as the SRV is pretty important on the ground now.

I feel I might be on to something here. It would make sense since Fighters are getting their own update to themselves. If it were just the addition of the passengers or the change of the mission system I can't see the fighters getting all of the attention of 2.2.

Or am I just way off base here. I was super wrong about the Cobra MK IV before it was released after all.

Any ideas on what 2.2 could bring?

i'd love that too.i imagine it's like those security forces in big stations, or the smallest ships in CQC?

I think you might be on to something there! Now officially excited for 2.2 :) I was looking forward to the bigger cities anyway, but FD have previously said that one day the smallest ships would have a purpose so this might be it.

Didn't MB say that fighters weren't pilotable by players back during the Horizons beta except in CQC? Too lazy to dig around for the post. He also answered that NPC crew won't be available as well. Was kind of a let down to be honest.

Why would they not be pilotable by players? If they're making a whole update dedicated to them you would think we could a least fly the things ourselves. They already have the cockpits rendered with CQC. It would make far more sense to allow us to control them ourselves than to send it out like a glorified drone.

No it was said ship launched fighters would be piloted by either the cmdr or AI.. your choice :)

Edit: Or even a member of your crew when Multi-Crew is a thing..

That would be so much win.Would that come with PowerPlay being Open Mode only? :D

What i want for 2.2:

Park my Anaconda/type 9 on orbit of planet and launch fighter/sidewinder fly down to planet and deploy srv from it. That's it i would be happy. Anything else is just extra.

Sidewinders are not loadable in a ships hanger, and SRVs are to big to fit into fighters. Maybe a dedicated ship-launched transport meant specifically to deploy an SRV, but I don't see an Imp fighter/Condor being able to deploy one.

Already confirmed that they won't be big enough to deploy an SRV. At least not the 2 we know of atm. Also the Sidewinder has a Frame Shift Drive. From my understanding of 2.2 everything that will be launchable won't. There's room for other fighters so I'm not ruling it out but I doubt we'll see a fighter deploying buggies any time soon. Though it would me cool to have.

I hope you are right.
Sounds all very good to me.
Currently I have great difficulty in seeing the usefulness of the small fighters that can be carried in bigger ships.
They are far too vulnerable.

I hope we will get a shuttle type vehicle.
A very poorly armed and unwieldy shuttle without jump capability that can be outfitted to carry a small SRV, or passenger cabins, or cargo slots etc.
I would like to use it to dock with smaller stations to transfer cargo or passengers from my Anaconda, or Cutter.

I am not interested in carrying fighters at all, but crave a practical and useful customisable shuttle.

If my vulture can fit a fighter or two, I'd love to have them/it assigned for combat, targetting one specific module... while I focus on another module. I mean, yea survavibility is low, but in combat, every extra shot helps!

Vulture?!??
I don't think a Vulture will be able to carry fighters. It is much too small.

I believe this to be correct. A ship would (probably) carry the F63 or Imperial Fighter. An Anaconda should be able to carry at least 10 which finally gives me my Battlestar.

So say we all. [up]

Ah okay that sounds cool then. Always wanted to hop into an F63 Condor for giggles.

Think the only ship I own at the moment that can launch them is my Anaconda. Don't think the Python can carry them and everything else I have is smaller. Not a big ship fan.

I was thinking that ship launched fighters might be able to interact more with ground POIs and maybe even mine materials, possibly even being equipped with wave scanners.

That we would have options for how to interact with planets. Driving SRVs is fun, but it doesn't hold a candle to the thrill of skimming surfaces in flight. But currently there aren't any reasons to fly over planets except to hunt for random POIs. Hunting POIs can be done from a safe distance, and doesn't require canyon flying, which is a shame. And our big ships don't have wave scanners for some reason.

I think it's listed as follows (correct me if I'm wrong):

Anaconda - 1 deployable fighter
Keelback - 1 deployable fighter
Cutter - 2 deployable fighters
Corvette - 2 deployable fighters

Does anyone know if a Type 9 is due to get a fighter?
