Newcomer / Intro A tough start - big debts.

Hello world!

Firstly, I'd like to mention I haven't used a forum in years! I used to love this sort of stuff, then fell out of love with it all when the internet turned into a sort of social cesspit - but, don't worry! The amount of fun and pleasure ED has given me over the past 6 months has made me believe in the world once more... I registered here :)
- you wanted people to welcome themselves? I thought that para covered it ;)

I've come seeking advice
SO, I've invest a good amount of time into my 'current' playthrough right now. I've upgraded my ship and bought up a few ships too. I now own a Viper.

I've since come under a lot of bad luck - well, luck isn't it, I've just been caught by the FEDS a few too many times. It's hard to distinguish sometimes how much security there is in the galaxy! I've been caught with a lot of stolen cargo which in the end cost me more than I bargained for.

I no have a 50k fine lingering on me that will turn into a wanted level in 16 hours. I'm properly unsure what I should do, pay it off? Or do I go rogue? That's a by idea right? I must of easily spent 200k on fines by now. Imagine the Christmas presents!

Additionally, because the game doesn't hand-hold you (which has its positives) - to get into a station without being scanned, am I supposed to slam the ship into silent running and pounce into the docking bay? Like barging through a crowd at Glastonbury or something?

I look forward to hearing your advice!

When I want to enter a station without being scanned I normally line up with the slot a good distance out (8+ km) and rattle it in at speed, that way they may start to scan you but it won't have time to complete before you're inside.

Good luck!

What i read you should request docking, after that go to silent running untill you dock.. If you want to avoid scans when having ileagal cargo or stolen. Try that, not done it myself yet though.

There's a mixture of advice. You can usually get to Outposts without being scanned, so they are better targets for landing. Silent running can work if you are not up to boosting in and landing quickly. Oh, and watch that silent running feature: It effectively closes the heat vents, so your systems will quickly overheat. Turning things off in the systems panel might help.

Your wanted status will only affect you if you stay in the systems run by the faction in which you got the wanted status. So, if you are wanted by the feds... stick to independant, empire, or Alliance worlds. (In the map, Fed worlds are blue...) Then you will be effectively clean.

I've definitely noticed that Outposts aren't patrolled by security, or at least not as much - I landed recently at one to find it didn't have a Black Market! So was joyous and then annoyed. Is there any way of checking if stations have a BM? Or is just 'hope' there is one?

So, it sounds like the best idea is to line up and rocket in. I'll take that on-board then.
- I had two loads of slaves on-board, worth 120k for a mission and I got caught literally at the last second. The screams of anguish! Aurggghhh!

Additionally,
If you spot someone who is WANTED when leaving a Starport. When do you open fire on him? I've waited until leaving the 'NO FIRE ZONE' and have destroyed the ship and gained a nice amount of cash from it - but then you get fined a tiny 200credits. It's as though 'you've done a good deed commander' but you've woken up the locals.

You didn't land one accidentally on another ship. There's plenty of reports of people accidently hitting other combatants, especially cops who fly in to 'help' and ending up with fines. The 200cr one sounds about right for that...

Is a hazardous thing, trading in stolen stuff! I avoid it like the plague, preferring to come in with power and able to move my ship around lol! Of course I progress slowly with making money so it's horses for courses. I also keep shooting ships to nav points and resource extraction sites, so not sure on the fines from nearby stations, that seems odd and would be interested in what people have to say about it.

Oh no, I purposely shot the guy out of space (he was in-front of me in the long queue to exit). It showed up that he was WANTED, so I thought I'd best not let him go.

I waited until we were outside the NO FIRE ZONE, yet the local police still went mental.

:D Nice. No, I meant other than him... It's the stray fire/collateral damage scenario that gets the cops agitated.

Another question - I'm sure everyone is asking stuff.

Targeting: So I'm in hyperspace, flying along as you do, I've pointed the ship to go to a PORT. As I'm flying along I've spotted a few ships flying past and I want to target them to check if their WANTED and if they have a bounty etc.

As soon as I hit 'T' to target the ship, find out their details. How do I now switch back to my initial target? I've noticed I then have to go back into the systems to target the PORT again, I can't just hit a key on the keyboard to go to my initial choice?

For my own amusement, I think this forum thread should be hidden ;)

Hey, I can clear that bounty for you which system are you in? 50k credits would be quite useful right now ;)

Seriously, check which faction your fine is with and just avoid that faction until you can pay it off. This might be quite hard if it's the Federation but even in Fed systems there are sometimes independent outposts that won't really care if you're wanted by the Feds and should let you dock.

I'd probably try to find some back water to hide out in for a bit. Maybe do a bit of mining, it's boring, but even 8 tonnes of mined Galite will net you about 15k. A few hours in an independent system blasting rocks should generate enough creds to clear your fine. The other option is bounty hunting in an independent. You've got a ship capable but with a 50K wanted sticker on your exhaust ports every merc with a gun is going to want a piece of you.

There is a next/prev target keybinding setting that I haven't tried out. Otherwise, it's back to the Systems screen to retarget.

Oh I think you can still pay it off. Dying does not help either, the fine becomes dormant and you still have to pay it off before they realise you are alive again (by scanning you or you committing another crime...)

Once the clock for the fine has elapsed, how do you pay it off?

Dock at any station and go to Contacts. The top option (can't remember the title) and you can pay off any bounty placed on you.

Word of warning though, clearing an outstanding bounty costs ~1.5x more than the initial fine.

re getting into station without beeing scanned:
I have also heard that chaff can interfere with the scanning (need lock to scan)
have not confirmed this.

Once it's turned into a bounty, you can safely dock in any system where you're still clean (ie outside the jurisdiction that issued it) and pay it off via the pilots federation (under contacts in starport services). However, it will cost you a premium over the bounty amount.
