Hello CMDRs !
These informations only reflect my way of playing the game, any other player might have different results depending on his play style.
My Experience
This was my first exploration trip, and for the sake of doing it I wanted to make it big. I had no idea of how to search for things or even what I was looking for. All I had in mind was Point A to Point B.
So I bought my first ever exploration ship, the ASP Explorer. I can make a detailed description of my ship, if some of you want me to. But basically, I bought heat sinks, field maintenance unit, the best discovery scanner and the best surface scanner I could find. My max. jump range was 31.95al, I never used the Neutron Highway.
I left the bubble on the 14th of May 2016 and reached Sagittarius A* on the 3rd of March 2017, so it took me 294 days to reach my goal... That's a lot, ED was not my only occupation at that time (exams, work, ...).
Today I finnaly completed this journey, 18th of June 2017. From its beginning, the whole trip took me a year and five days to complete !
When I left the bubble, I had a "Scout" exploration rank (because of a few things I scanned inside the bubble). Now that I've sold all my exploration data I have a "Pioneer" rank, which is right before Elite ! That's nice [haha] !

When I began this exploration trip I had no interest in money, but then I realized how I would need to work hard to catch up with all the new content... I still haven't tried engineers !
So money became a problem, I started wondering... "How big will my reward be ?"
When 2.3 got live, I noticed all the discoveries prices going up. That was a relief ! So how big is my reward ?
Well, when I left the bubble I had 3,791,907cr, now I have 145,391,038cr. That makes a total of 141,599,131cr ! I expected a lot less !
Money image proof
Now do keep in mind that I was, and still am a unexperienced explorer, desptide my pioneer rank. I didn't explore around that much, I stayed on my path, straight to my destination. But everything I found that had somewhat of a value, I scanned. Plus, since that 2.3 update, every Honk I made was good profit because of its infinite range !
I'm happy with that reward, I don't know if it's lower than the average gain for that long of a trip, but it's enough for my needs !
In total, I visited more or less 2,600 systems.
In conclusion, I would say that exploration is definitly not for everyone. I know that I have a lot of patience, and I can enjoy small things.
The risk is "high" when it comes to exploration, no direct threat except you, but that's enough to get you killed on a small mistake.
Don't go out with only money in your mind. Try enjoy the trip ! I know I did [yesnod]
