A very weird scavenger hunt mission

I've done easliy 100+ missions to kill scavs, so I am very familiar with these missions, but today there was a very weird one. I usually take Apex shuttles to do missions to settlements for unrelated reasons. Anyway, I arrive at the settlement, disembark and get into position while the normal 2 scav dropships drop out of supercruise. One shuttle drops 3 scavs so I head that way, and I didn't watch the 2nd drop ship. The first drop ship dropped 3 scavs and the total counter was at 0/9 so I assumed that the 2nd drop ship had dropped 6 more scavs elsewhere (I was later to learn that this was not exactly the case). I dispatch the 3 scavs pretty quickly, but for the life of me I couldn't find the other 6 scavs after much hunting and scouting the entire settlement. I thought they may have "wandered off" which is a bug that sometimes happens, but this was not the case either. I suddenly noticed a Viper mkIII with a "pirate" ship kit installed that looked like it had landed ~300m from the settlement. Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot? Was this another player? Let's find out! I got a fresh battery charge and filled ammo and headed to this ship. I realized that this was the 2nd dropshp!!! And it didn't drop any of its scavs. Luckily I was in my purpose-engineered scav killing Dominator suit with an Executioner, Intimidator and Tormentor, all G5 fully engineered. So I approach the second drop ship and it was not actually landed; it's landing gear were not lowered and it was kicking up a small cloud of dust while sitting on the ground. I surmised that the remaining 6 scavs were still in the ship!! I begin firing away. Shields drop, hull almost gone and I'm almost out of ammo. Do I run back and fill ammo or just blow this ship up? I decide to just blow the ship up. I take the last couple of shots and.... The ship drops its 6 scavs then immediately blows up!! Being almost out of ammo, I'm unable to take out the 6 scavs, who are now really really angry at me for blowing up their ship. So I high-tail it back to the settlement to get more bullets with them in hot pursuit. Boy, this was fun! I rearmed and picked up another battery charge and finally took out the last 6 scavs, who thankfully dispersed a little so it really wasn't a 6v1, more like 3 2v1's. Another mission in the bag, called in my Apex driver to my next mission and carved 9 new notches into the stock of my Intimidator.

I have never seen anything even remotely close to this. Has anyone?

I've been in a Frontline ship where the settlement and CZ didn't spawn so it just ended up headbutting the ground. Seems like a variant of the situation.
