A veteran's retrospective

That's a choice. Back then you had no choice.

Anyway, are you really suggesting old school games weren't more difficult? Or are you just being argumentative for the hell of it?

Old school games were more punishing when you "didn't win" - but more difficult is debatable. There was a lot more "start over, sucker!" in old-school games.

Yes, so why do we have to park our ships manually?

It's easier to put the brakes on than it is to park? And if the docking puter worked flawlessly many wouldn't dock manually.

Bottom line is there are MANY ways someone can make the game more difficult for THEMSELVES. Only use a sidewinder in combat, or fit lowest spec modules. Difficulty should be a player CHOICE not enforced arbitrarily.

oh regards the OP the best space game was TIE Fighter. I'd KILL for a remake of that! Anyone know whay the Totally Games people are doing now...was it someone Holland?

I just had to reboot my Cobra, it was literally tumbling end over end away from the action in a conflict zone after a Test: Mostly Harmless commander took out the thrusters.

What a brilliant moment, nothing's coming close to that.

I was sceptical of reduced damage and fuel costs, but this actually has the effect of letting you get into and out of combat quicker - it keeps the pace up for combat pilots. Pushes the action to the fore.

I agree with you Sanderson, this isn't going to be the old, brutal, solo Elite, but it's shaping up into a great game.

The combat is where it really shines, would be nice to SEE the game reacting to what's going on in warzones beyond a bit of waffle on the Galnet.

The game has engaged me again after a long slump.
