A view of the stars from Earth

One of the many appeals of Elite Dangerous during KickStarter was the promise of our MilkyWay galaxy mapped out for us all to exist/fight/campaign/explore - ‘blaze your own trail’ a la sandbox and wander at the vastness of space, its planets revolving, orbiting suns and dancing with moons and more...

Does the view in ED from Earth resemble the view from your backyard?

Please post your screen grabs here:

Aww shame this'll never get found amongst new threads

Is there a dedicated explorer (look what I saw) thread somewhere? (-;

I tried to see 'Orion' when I was flying around Earth, but failed to see it. I was wondering if it was because we are viewing the stars outside of an atmosphere - and hence we are able to see thousands more stars than we would normally be able to; and the constellations we are used to seeing are therefore being lost amongst all the extras?!?

You see more stars outside the Earth's atmosphere due to the light scrattering from the water vapor and thermal difference.

Intelligent threads disappear fast dude.

You should have titled it "OMGZORS the stars from earth view is all wrong this game sucks"

Then people would have brought photos.

If you go to the map you can see all the constellations. I wish we could switch them on in game sometimes. Cool thing is they are there you are right.

Ps did anyone know sirius hasnt always been the north star as it moves in relation to our planet. It also soon won't be in real life.

To spot the constellation Orion you will need to find Barnards Loop first. It's the big red crescent. The 3 stars of the hunter's belt should be easy to spot and from that you should be able to orientate yourself for spotting the whole constellation.

Sirius has never been the north star. I think you meant Polaris.

If you want to see Orion in game from the Solar System, just go into the galaxy map and search for Betelgeuse. Lock on to it as your destination, and look for it out of your cockpit window. It's at the top-left of Orion in real life (at least the part that most people recognise as Orion). To confirm, search for Rigel and do the same. Rigel's at the bottom right of the constellation.

Yes it does.
I don't have any grabs though.
I'll see how far I am from Sol and see if I can get there quick. Hang on.

Too far at the mo. There are plenty of screenies of it though.

Orion as seen from Earth. Something about the belt, though:
Alnilam (the middle one) seems to be missing/very faint which is
why I really had trouble finding it.

And Orion as seen from Ross 154. Take note of Barnard's Loop
I arrived to Sol through Ross and somehow I spotted this Orion
without looking for it (constellation lines here are my estimation)

Ahh clever ill try that next time im near. Next time im on i will look to see what constellations look like from where i am, about 100 ly from earth. They may still look similar though most likely none will i guess.

awasome.. and fully appreciate the atmosphere spoils the view as it were.

Maybe a few bigger screen shots would do the job - we could squint.
I've just been outside to spot the big dipper nearly overhead and Orion out to the west viewed from the UK and imagined a 'parked' Cobra nearby

Now that I'm looking again, I might be totally off in my seeing Orion from Ross 154. Could Betelgeuse have moved that much?

Oh man, you're more right than you know :D

We've been babbling in this thread for the past few hours, there are some comparative photos too, albeit nothing too big or fancy :)

I wonder if it has.. from that perspective. Do you have a larger version of that image?

On another note, I created this thread to see images not discuss if ED has it exactly correct magnitudes et al - it looks to be very good from what I've seen.. just wondered what space looked like from earth that's all (-:

As an amateur astronomer I use plate solving software that can analyse any starfield as seen from Earth and it automatically identifies where in the sky it is. I ran the first image through it...1035462.jpg

@hadron42 Nice work sir.. have you been to earth in game yet?

'Plate solving software'.. now that is cool - amazing to see that Frontier have achieved a realistic scene

More views from near earth please - this is really interesting
