Aaaaand this is why I don't play Open Play - and possibly ED

you should not only not play open, you should not only not play ED, you should not play ANY online game whatsoever. actually i recomend you deinstall any network device on your pc.

My problem is not the loss of money, hell, I'm in a Cobra! And I'm still on the fence of whether I like people imposing themselves on my game, (I hated it before, but now I'm not sure). The problem I have is that people target other players because they are real players, and not NPC's. It creates a weird kind of dynamic, where people are pretending to be in spaceships in space, looking to annoy real people. So that breaks the immersion for me. Why not just go an punch someone?

ps: I tried to find the video on YouTube. What's the title?

No one is imposing himself on your game, you clicked open, everything can happen.

The thing with targeting real players over NPCs is not that surprising. For me as a pirate its sadly a waste of time to go after biowaste/food cartridge carrying NPCs so I have to look out for players. I would gladly take the option to go after both and make some Cr of it.

On top of pirates you have players looking for more of a challenge then slaughtering their thousand NPC.

Yep, I know. I used to play the old elite, and could eliminate whole packs of pirates while they were still just dots on the screen. I spent ages being deadly, and just got bored waiting for promotion to elite, so just stopped playing. Maybe they could make the NPC's more challenging too? These days I have a FT job and a family and other stuff, so don't get more than an hour or two a week, so can't progress so fast. I think when I eventually improve my gameplay I will probably enjoy getting a real pirate (arrr!) dropping in on me. Actually my real issue is real people who hang around space stations and ram other players, knowing that it won't affect their status. Again, it's just other players trying to ruin other peoples' fun.

I just remembered what I used to do 30 years ago... I was so bored I'd just attack space stations, and try to get as many police after me as I could...

Played the Original Elite back on the commodore 64 in the 80's.
Solo play but it was a great game for me.
I have since become a major game player but have been sickened off from playing MMO's.
If ED was MMO only i would not be here.
SOLO play and not having to put up with the spoiled brats who get there kicks out of annoying people is just fine by me. ;)

2. I record these encounters becasue frankly it is hilarious scoring kills / forcing combat logs on big bad ships like Pythons and Anacondas with a Passenger Liner

I find interesting that your "Passenger Liner" is equipped with griefer level DPS equipment, and is basically made for hit, kill and resupply tactic. And most of "big bad ships" you encountered are totally out of this league, and are mostly NPC fighters as you said. Not sure where is joy in that, but I guess you occasionally met someone who puts up a good fight.

Problem here is not having actual PvP options in the game, as both you (blood hungry killer) and Weekend Joe (taking his 12y old cousin as a wingman) will met at the same place, RES site probably.

There should be some kind of PvP spots instead, that are designed for gladiator style PvP battles, both free for all and winged variants.

Your loadout is optimized to make crazy high damage in shortest amount of time, catching people unprepared. It is valid tactic, but I can't call that PvP, but I also can't call it griefing. How many battles can you do without going to the station?

People are pimping their cars for drag races, but I haven't heard any of them enjoyed racing with street legal cars. You are basically making fully optimized builds (which is ok, and I respect that knowledge), but problematic part is having so much fun using that over totally unmatched folks.

I would respect you more if you link some video where you battle actually competent player, doing similar loadout types.

You are like martial artist going in the bar, and kicks drunk wannabe fighters.
I would for example really enjoy videos with you making this type of loadouts, but challenging people at same competency levels. That would be really awesome stuff.

Having watched the video I just have to laugh at this thread. Play in open and expect to be engaged in PVP, whether you want it or not, end of story, you are making a choice by playing in open and it all boils down to PVP. If you're not competent enough to A: defend yourself, B: destroy your opponent or C: at the very least know how to escape the area then either don't cry on the forums about it or don't play open. Simples. It's threads like these that deliberately make open sound like a living hell for players deciding whether or not to participate in it.

I agree.
I feel like saying "Welcome to the Internet" every time I read one of these threads.

Uhh are you mad because the rules are what they are or because it took you a destroyed Conda before you found out about those rules?

If I was flying that Orca I would have thought you were going to gank me and act accordingly. There were two of you and you are flying a ' Conda. You're flying a very scary and threatening spaceship you know.
He can't see your intentions, just how many guns you can fit on your Conda and an appraching Cobra.

You should not have remembered the rules of Ultima Online, you should have remembered the rules of ED (and buy a Cobra like your brother. You can buy a really nice Cobra for that Conda insurance bill)

ah yes cause no one should fly a ship they want and not be upset when a griefer decides to kill them for the lolz , some one commented that stories like this make open seem like hell, yeah maybe so even if its mostly crying, but unhappy customers are dangerous to games cause happy player might or might not get others playing but that one unhappy guy will tell lots of folks about his bad experience and don't know but i would rather have more people buying and playing the game then people turned off the idea because of bad word of mouth reviews , not really sure what could be done about griefers that would not hurt pirates badly but just food for thought , maybe personal bounty boards where you could set bounty and it be locked to the ship the player used to kill you, -shrugs- eh i dont know , but would probably be hard to make work right and still probably be ineffective by itsself

Wow, that's one epic sentence! Your post needs ganking with full-stops :D

The kind of personal bounty that you've suggested would be exploited wholesale, very easily. Rather that trying to think up and implement silly mechanics, how about players in Open take a little bit of self-responsibility and be prepared for encounters with other players?

It's really quite easy. If you don't want to risk being murderd, play in Solo or a private group...
