So, from reading the forums there are various ways a player can "lose" his ship without it actually being destroyed:
Now, given that we "eject" when our ship is destroyed, taking us back to our previous dock, maybe there should be a way to retrieve our "broken" ship and cargo if we choose to eject instead of using self-destruct?
How about you can pay your insurance, get a new ship etc, but your old ship remains accessible for some time (inversely proportional to how close to inhabited space you are - after all, if someone can find it, they'll probably grab it, but in deepest darkest space it's pretty safe)?
If you can get to your previous ship and tag it with some sort of "salvage" scanner/item, then your insurance payment will be 90% refunded (less 10% percentage for example, for salvage costs), and your cargo is made available for collection (within a certain timeframe) at the closest station to your abandoned ship (again, with some "storage fee" applied).
If you chose not to (could not afford to) pay the insurance, and started back with the basic sidewinder, then you could reclaim the abandoned ship in the same way (with some significant fee attached via a loan) if you can reach it and tag it for recovery.
Of course, if you "lose" the ship whilst exploring - thousands of Ly away, then it could be a very dangerous trip to try and get back to recover it...but in your advantage, you have more time. Maybe if you're heading to an anarchy to retrieve it, there might already be pirates circling ready to pick the bones who need to be chased off before you can tag it for recovery/salvage. Lots of gameplay possibility.
Any thoughts (and apologies if this is already documented/accepted/rejected/discussed)?
