Abandon ship, recover ship?

So, from reading the forums there are various ways a player can "lose" his ship without it actually being destroyed:
  • Broken canopy, run out of air
  • Run out of fuel
  • Dead drives
  • Broken sensors
  • etc etc

Now, given that we "eject" when our ship is destroyed, taking us back to our previous dock, maybe there should be a way to retrieve our "broken" ship and cargo if we choose to eject instead of using self-destruct?

How about you can pay your insurance, get a new ship etc, but your old ship remains accessible for some time (inversely proportional to how close to inhabited space you are - after all, if someone can find it, they'll probably grab it, but in deepest darkest space it's pretty safe)?

If you can get to your previous ship and tag it with some sort of "salvage" scanner/item, then your insurance payment will be 90% refunded (less 10% percentage for example, for salvage costs), and your cargo is made available for collection (within a certain timeframe) at the closest station to your abandoned ship (again, with some "storage fee" applied).

If you chose not to (could not afford to) pay the insurance, and started back with the basic sidewinder, then you could reclaim the abandoned ship in the same way (with some significant fee attached via a loan) if you can reach it and tag it for recovery.

Of course, if you "lose" the ship whilst exploring - thousands of Ly away, then it could be a very dangerous trip to try and get back to recover it...but in your advantage, you have more time. Maybe if you're heading to an anarchy to retrieve it, there might already be pirates circling ready to pick the bones who need to be chased off before you can tag it for recovery/salvage. Lots of gameplay possibility.

Any thoughts (and apologies if this is already documented/accepted/rejected/discussed)?

+1 the game needs more features to negate dumb stuff like having to self destruct because you lost your thrusters in a fight.

I also think there should be a remote repair and/or towing service/modules so your pals or NPC responders can help you out.

I would be absolutely flabbergasted if something along these lines hasent already been done and is just waiting implementation

Or they intend to do it and just havent gotten round to doing it yet

Pretty standard really

I think this is just wide open to abuse by players using it to make money. An Insurance is already ridiculously cheap in game and it not hard to make sure got a bit of cash to paying the insurance guys off. An I love that this game make you think about such things.

Just make sure you aren't chatting at the same time as claiming insurance and accidently press the button don't claim insurance button, I lost 200k sidewinder to that.

Don't you think anyone who did not get destroyed. the insurance company would have it payed to have it towed? Having a little repair on a ship is fine.

Great idea. Its ludicrous that you have to abandon a several million credit ship because the sensors are busted. On top of that it would be nice to have an ejection animation when your ship is destroyed. Maybe you could even hove some sort of procedure you could do to eject when you get destroyed. If you do it right you get money off the rebuy cost or something. But I really wish they would add some sort of NPC repair service like a space AA that you could call if you run out of fuel.

How exactly could players make money off this? They still pay the insurance costs, and they can only get some of what they already paid back (not all of it!), and that's even only if they can get back to their abandoned ship in time.

It just seems strange and immersion-breaking that an otherwise serviceable ship is destroyed when the player ejects, just because one component has failed.
