Ability to purchase Credits

During early stages of Development ( alpha ), Maybe from newsletter or David Braben's Interview, I heard that FD will allow players to purchase Credits from Store just like Skins. Is this still true statement or did I took a page from CIG's vocabulary.

I am pretty sure I heard the statement about ability to purchase Credits but please do correct me if I am wrong.

Thank You Commanders.

Edited: It was not my intention to make a thread about PRO and CONS of in game Credit shop, I was merely trying to find out it above statement was true. But since so many Commanders are already interested in Pro vs Cons. I think this Picture sums it up for few.

I am pretty sure I heard the statement about ability to purchase Credits but please do correct me if I am wrong.

It was stated in the Kickstarter FAQ that Frontier *may* sell in-game credits:

Will the game be free to play after the initial purchase?
We do not plan to make it subscription-based. Once you have purchased the game up front, you will be able to play thereafter for no further cost. Everything in the game will be purchasable with in-game Credits, earned from trading, bounty-hunting, etc. We will probably allow the supplemental purchase of Credits with real money, for those who want to accelerate their progress through the game.

We do plan to charge for additional updates, to be available sometime after the original release. These will offer additional content, features and gameplay.

Thus far, we have only seen in-game cosmetic items for sale in the store - no credits.

Yep, it's £10 per credit.

:D I bet somebody would still buy

I hope they do not do this but Microtransactions are the 'thing' these days and though I do not like them if they are not required to progress then I can tolerate them.

When a fancy paint job ship goes by I just have to sigh and live with yet another reminder of what it would be like to have more disposable income. There I was hoping to escape from reality

Saying that I did see a £2.00 paint job that I like.....

I've said it before and I'll say it again. As much as I love FD and ED, I will simply uninstall the game and leave it if they ever introduce purchasing game credits.

It's the main reason why I won't be playing star citizen.

Not going to go into any reasoning or try to justify this, because really, if FD ever decide to do it, then the justification will need to be from them.

Cosmetics are fine... in fact, I really like that idea. As it legitimately helps support the game without bringing in any imbalance to the game. But credits? Absolutely not.

That kind of model almost always makes it so progressing for free is so slow that you would practically have to buy credits. I really really hope they don't do that.

A big no from me too, but modern commercial practice probably demands yes. There may also be a need to FD to generate revenue streams to continue development (and earn profit).

By all means sell cosmetic fripperies for real cash - no problem there. i wont be buying myself but for those who want to, why not?

There will be a real world black market in credits, so that is something that will have to be managed.

I would not be overly concerned unless FD are sold to the likes of EA. then we are up a creek without a paddle.

A definite no from me, I think it has no place in Elite Dangerous.
.
The whole basis of this game is to strive towards Elite status. If credits can be bought, then that is just an easy route to 'elite' and would make the ranking system completely valueless.
If purchase of credits does become an option, then in my opinion, any person who buys even a single credit must forfeit the right to progress through the rankings, full stop.
.
Surely David Braben would not really want to undermine the root purpose of the game in this way.

Iam absolutly willing to put a little amount into the Game for skins and Cockpit items. But buying ingame currency with hard cash is so (insert bad words). Where is the sense of playing?

It could be problematic, especially if the game allows for players to give credits to other players. That really would open the floodgates for the far east grinders who'd then sell such credits online.

FD needs to find other solutions to gaining revenue. So far, it has the skin sales and the planned game modules, but they do need to figure out what else they can make revenue from to keep the game going.

Games with in-game purchases are generally free in the 1st place, candy crush is free, and you can progress for free, but you can progress faster with payments.
Elite dangerous will be launched at £40. It would be unfair to make progress by having to pay extra!
Paying for paint jobs, or a cockpit radio, or a halloween bobblehead wouldn't affect the game in any way... :)
But paying for expansion packs is fair - this has been normal for decades. And in the years to come, unless ED is being constantly evolved, there will be another Frontier game which will be paid for - Elite: Deadly (perhaps)

+1*infinity (rounded to the nearest 1) not allowing purchase of in game credits and items beyond skins and other aesthetic items; it just destroys what the game is about and what I (and many other commanders) hold precious about Elite / Frontier.

The strive to get to the ship, items and earning potential is what makes this game and the others that preceeded it legendary.

I'm all for purchasing credits. I get maybe an hour every few nights to play, and maybe 2-3 hours on a Saturday or a Sunday. I'll never have the time to grind the hundreds of millions--or potentially billions--that the high-end ships will likely end up costing (if Anaconda pricing in B3 is any indication). Nor will I ever have the time to dedicate to becoming a god-like bounty hunter or privateer. I'd love to be able to short-circuit the grind by dropping some real-world money in exchange for currency so I can experience more of the game.

I'll be playing solo anyway, so what I do won't bother anyone else. I want to star in my own universe and play the game my own way.

I love buying skins/paint. But I would be turned off if FD made this game pay to win.

I lost interest in Eve online once I had to start paying real money to keep up with the demands. It ruined it for me. That and you can just buy anything you want... Where's the sense of accomplishment? Why are we even playing the game?

So Absolutely not! ( I'm sure They won't ) I have faith in them :)

This post by Michael seems to indicate that they will try to stick to only cosmetic items:

The original Kickstarter also said that you could buy credits for cash - which has been negatively received. Would you prefer that?

Michael

To put that in context, that was in response to people complaining about being "forced" to buy cosmetic items for real money and not be able to buy the for in-game credits. This after the Kickstarter FAQ stated that...

Everything in the game will be purchasable with in-game Credits, earned from trading, bounty-hunting, etc.

So cosmetics only for now...but this will of course depend on how successful it is. If it doesn't hold up financially then they might have to look at alternative ways of bringing in revenue.
