about bulkheads

Hey, are the "mirrored" bulkheads in any way weaker against kinetic energy than "military" bulkheads - And the "reactive" bulkheads weaker against lasers than "military" bulkheads?

It says in their description. Reinforced and military are straight forward upgrades and give balanced defense. Mirrored are stronger against lasers and weak vs kinetic and the last one (forgot the name) is the opposite.

well yes, but how weak? The question was if for example the mirrored one is weaker against kinetic armor than the military armor? Or even weaker against kinetic energy than reinforced armor

Way back when in Beta some very kind Cmdr did some research on this ... Feel free to search for it if you'd like to see the detailed results.

The tldr version is that mirrored is the best all round armour .... Unless you know that you'll be fighting an all cannon viper.

Of course this could have been nerfed by the devs in a recent release :)

I'd really like to know the current stats. Very unfortunate that item descriptions are quite obscure sometimes.

I tried to answered this in another thread today. Apparently from beta it was 25% all resists for reinforced alloy, 50% all resists for military grade, 75% thermal/25% kinetic for mirrored, and 25% thermal/ 75% kinetic for reactive. They may have tweaked this since then, but probably is still the same. Won't know for sure until its been tested.

The only tests I've seen were from way back in Beta 1. I'm sure FD has been tweaking the numbers all along, but if the general principle holds from the design back then, the answer to your questions are:

Yes, Mirrored armor is a little weaker against kinetic weapons than Military armor, and Yes, Reactive armor is a little weaker against energy weapons than Military armor.

The design seems to go roughly like this:

  • Light = Light armor, worst overall
  • Reinforced = Medium armor, general purpose
  • Reactive = Medium armor with a bonus against kinetics and penalty against lasers
  • Mirrored = Medium armor with a bonus against lasers and penalty against kinetics
  • Military = Higher grade armor with no penalties, but the respective bonuses in Reactive and Military are still higher than Military armor

Here's the link to the research done by Erik Marcaigh (first graphic chart), and again I would expect the exact numbers to be different in final release, but this seems to be what the FDEVs are intending as the overall design:

About the same as reinforced, but weaker than military.

Someone examined the exact effects quite a while ago, but anecdotal evidence suggests it hasn't been changed since then.

Edit: post above mine has the link.

Personally, I think lightweight bulk heads are the best all-round armor, because I just leave if my shields are in danger of collapsing.

I think it tells you when you click on them what damage type they protect against the best.
Military being the best all round.

I'd also like to know this

and if the mirrored / kinetic aren't as good as the miltary grade, why are they so much more expensive?
