About new AI tactics

I came back to elite after a few months break and tested new AI in high intensity conflict zone. I targeted first asp and while choosing power plant as target I saw some one shooting me from behind. I thought my A5 shields last just fine in my vulture so continued shooting the asp. Suddenly my shields dropped and when I was about to turn and check what a heck was shooting at me my thrusters and engine were dead. Before 1.3 I never lost my thrusters or engine. Shooter was npc. Is this new AI tactic to blow our sub systems like cmdr's? Then I just watched my slow death and paid my insurance money. ED: Dangerous :)

Funnily enough, I am yet to lose a subsystem in 1.3. Has been happening pretty much every time when I let my shields die before.

Yesterday I took an assassination mission. Oh boy. Before I could scratch the Python's hull, I was spiralling through space with my thrusters gone. SJA specifically said that they don't aim for subsystems, but since they're so much better shots now, you're getting hit more, and thus your subsystems are being bashed by collateral damage. You don't need to target subsystems to do damage :)

Hehe, what were you flying? I took on a Master Python in a Python last night, had two Vipers in wing, one of them Elite. They burst like bubbles, I didn't even use a shield cell. On the other hand, I had massive problems with two Eagles escorting my target, a T6! Consistency is still an issue I guess.

On-topic, I too am pretty sure it's 'accidental' module hits that you're taking from NPCs. Can occur the other way too, notice how your targets sometimes pop with hull left.

I had a nice fight with an elite vulture npc two days ago, who nearly shot out my powerplant (6% left, all other modules at 90%+, hull at 54%). Was most likely due to it using a plasma accelerator hit...these things really hurt!

Maybe SJA didn't enable the NPCs to target subsystems, but increased their "luck" factor? ;)

AI seems a lot better with 1.3, especially when flying in wings. There's been plenty of times I've about had my butt handed to me by Vulture wingman while taking on assassination missions, so I'm a lot more cautious taking on certain tasks than I used to be. I think it's a vast improvement over previous versions, and makes hunting a lot more interesting. :D

The AI queen dev has said (somewhere- can't be bothered to find source) that the AI do not target sub systems. But they are better at power management and higher ranks are more deadly. Sub systems naturally get damage as the hull is penetrated.

She did an experiment internally with them targeting sub systems and her anaconda did not last long vs an elite vulture.

One of the things I sorely missed from the original Elite was the thrill of fighting your way back to the station with half of your ship missing.

I love this experience in flight sims too - nursing your damaged ride home.

Last night I had to fight my way back to Hudson's home base after multiple interdictions and took a right beating from a dangerous AI pilot, having taken out two mostly harmless AI.

It was epic. The AI was superb, he was actually NASTY. I lost my canopy and had to run.

It took years for modders to patch realistic AI into games like IL2 Cliffs of Dover and Falcon 4.0, so it's brilliant to finally see quality AI in Elite.

Eagles are like wasps in 1.3. They use every trick in the book, and are so nimble to start with. In an Asp with A-class Thrusters, 4 LASERs and a couple of MCs, it's like spinning in mud trying to hit a ferret with a carefully targeted custard cream. Trust me.

Viper. He had a Dangerous Vulture wingman, though :)

Stumbled across the quote I meant: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=154096&page=6&p=2361119#post2361119

Heck, I was in a fully kitted Clipper and came across a solo Elite Viper. It almost took out my shields all by itself.

I approve.

My first assassination mission in 1.3...

I'm glad I brought my Python there instead of my Clipper, that's all I have to say...

Damn you Python + 2 Vultures with rail guns...

Took out the target with 66% hull left and ran like the pirate I am...

Yarrr ;-;
