I don't know of any plans to include true HDR support and haven't experimented with the new lighting system enough to know if features like multiple point or directional lights (this will be much easier to test once we get ships in the alpha, though I'll have to check if the tutorial missions are sufficient) are present, but the alpha has significant changes to the GraphicsConfiguration.xml that affect color grading, tone mapping, and bloom intensity, which are probably responsible for the observed 'shininess'.
