Hardware & Technical About to build a new rig. What should I get?

Hi,

Decided I need a new gaming rig. Thinking to spend around €2000-2500 on it.
I just don't have a clue what to get and I haven't kept myself informed on the latest hardware trends...

So...any ideas? :)

With your budget, you can offer yourselves the current components of high performance. Core I7 4670K or 4770K - Motherboard Asus ROG series with Z87 chipset or Z97 chipset - Graphics card NVidia GTX 780 or AMD Radeon R9 - Samsung SSD 840 -Ram DDR3 16 GB 1866 Mhz - LED Screen Samsung, Iiyama etc ... 27 inches or more.

The web sites of remote sale of computer components allow you to configure several machines before making your final choice

You could use something from PC Pro A list as a starting point / benchmark.

Then have a look at Tom's Hardware for an idea of what kind of graphics card you fancy.

And 4K monitors are just around the corner - Amazon are quoting them at around £500 and available in June.

A good graphics card and screen can last you years. All the other bits you can swap you go. That's what works well for me and I've had the same machine for years!

The new Intel Z97 motherboards are out now, and the faster 'Devils Canyon i7 is going to arrive very soon.

If you can wait a few months, much faster Intel cpus will be out.

2nd half of this year will see the new Maxwell based nvidia gpus.

New intel cpu comming out within the next few months. Will have way better thermals than 4770k and run 4.0/4.4 standard. Shuld easily get to 4.9-5.0 on air.

I wuld wait for that.

Get 2x8 gb ram. Not 4x4 ... Easier to upgrade if needed down the road.

Gfx - whatever rocks your boat. 280< or gtx770<. Go for silent and cool cooling solution. Never stock. Gigabyte, asus, saphire and msi have some good ones.

SSD is a must. I wuld go with the new intel 730. Stability and reliability is #1. If you go mainstream 840 evo something.

Depends on if you want the new PC right away, or are you willing to wait a few months.

Either way, www.verkkokauppa.com & www.jimms.fi are your friends.

You could do worse than check out what Jimms have to offer as pre-built & depending on your mood, customize a bit or buy the parts & build yourself.

If you're not planning to wait, here are a couple of systems I believe to be in the price range you specified:

Maybe switch the i7 4770K to i5 4670K and GTX 780 to GTX 780 Ti

Thanks guys, much appreciated. I don't think I want to wait, starting my summer holidays 1st of June and would love to have a new rig to play the beta with :)

Zieman, I usually do get my hardware from Jimm's :) Live 15min away from the store.

Right, returned from my weekend fishing trip, used my old computer for 10 mins when the HD died on me...saw it as a sign to order the new rig. This is what I decided on:

Intel Haswell i7-4770K, LGA1150, 3.5GHz, 8MB, Boxed
Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 3, LGA1150, Intel Z97, DDR3, ATX
Corsair Hydro H110
Corsair 750W RM-Series ATX-PSU, Modular, 80+ Gold
Asus NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 TI DirectCU II, 3GB GDDR5, 2xDVI/HDMI/DP, PCI-E 3.0 + Watchdogs
Kingston 16GB (2x8GB) HyperX Fury, DDR3 1600MHz, CL10, 1.5V, red
SteelSeries Siberia v2 Full-size Headset, NAVI edition, yellow/black
Seagate 3TB Barracuda, 3.5", Sata3, 7200rpm, 64MB x 2 pcs
Kingston 240GB SSDNow V300, 2.5", SATA III - Stand Alone
Fractal Design Define XL R2 Black Pearl ATX-Case, Titan

Anything stand out as a bad choice? Planning to turn my old PC to network storage, that's why got two 3TB hard drives...one to the new rig and the other one to the old one. I plan to use my old SSD (128Gb) in the new rig...probably for OS installation, and use the bigger SSD for game installation...and the Barracuda for all media crap I tend to obtain...I'll get the customer Oculus Rift...so didn't plan on bigger and better monitors, at least not right away.

Price, about €2050 which was within the budget I had set for myself...:)

I hope I'll get the hardware this week...wouldn't like to wait for the parts too long.

Yes patience patience might be worth waiting for the maxwell gpu's should be out soon.
ED so far does not require a demanding machine although with a 4k screen and i have noticed frame rates can drop when wizzing round gas giants to dark undiscovered moons.
SC uses cryengine 3 so definitely look at a motherboard with sli capability. Does anyone use sli???
Should be fine with the 780 it will beat my 660 anyway.

If you go the amd route, I will warn you, especially since I hear electricity is more expensive in Europe than the USA. That 290 x you will need a hefty power supply, and I don't just mean watts. You will also need a water cooler. With your budget I can't see any reason to get. 290x. They are inferior to nvidia, the only reason to get one is for poor people like me lol. Even though I regret it now, because it ended up costing the same almost as a 780 ti.
I bought the 290x used, for 300, and a new water cooler for 160, with back plate. Any ways when I first turned it on to make sure it worked, and tested it, with stock fan settings it was going over 40c on a idle and 90 when taxed, which I found is normal for these cards. I tried to over clock it and it shut my PC off. So I had to upgrade the power supply to a single rail 60 amp, vs my 650 watt 16 amp 3 rail.
When I got the new psu which cost 100, now up to 560, which I could of got a 780, this card according to gpu z when over clocked draws 30 amps.

Anyways with the 3000 you have, converted to USA money. God USA money sucks compared to yours lol. Anyways, I'd recommended getting a 4770k i7 or i5, the i5 if all your doing is gaming. 2 780tis, custom water cooling loop, with atleast a 2 120mm fan radiator. 8gbs of ram, unless you are going to try running like 3 plus games at once, or something like that. A 1 tb 7200rpm for back up, and a ssd. That will cost atleast from new egg here around 3000. That will never not be able to play a game for the foreseeable future of gaming. Now at 4k triple monitors you would prolly get like 5 fps, but those monitors are really expensive so...

Although, i would also recommend thinking about cutting the costs of the CPU, and gpu. Change those 780s to 290xs, and get your self a nice 4k tv. Or if your more into the 3 screen set up 3 good 1080p monitors.

Now my personal recommendation since Europe has real internet, unlike my 2mb down, and 440kbs up. Cut out one of those 780ti, and get a 10 inch windows 8, android, or I pad, with at least 1080. Then you can play elite dangerous on the go if you have that legendary internet I keep hearing about. I use a dual band 600mbps wireless, cause that's all the new I pad can do, which I didn't know at the time. A anyways it streams 1080 p to my I pad, and there is no lag. Now I can only go around my house with it, but it's a must for me, because I usually don't get to just sit on my couch for long periods. So it's nice to be able to get up, and go where I need to, got 3 kids. It works well, it's easier or the same as a keyboard and mouse.

I'll end with if you really only want to play this game, you won't need a massive rig like any of that. I'll load up fraps, and tell you my fps in the alpha build, streaming to my I pad. I have a 290x i5 3570k oced to 4.5 8gbs of ram and no ssd.

I get in the first waste disposal mission 90-200 fps, that's not over clocked. Other ten the CPU, in windows mode max settings, streaming to the I pad.
