Community Event / Creation Abraka Drabble e-Book

Ok, the discussion has started, but rather than fill up the Drabble's post, lets have a new one.

Idea's and discussions and volunteers for sections.

I mentioned it would be a good idea.

Darkoba also had been thinking about this, with a chapter per topic, and to include some of the funnier conversations.

I also propose a biography section for each Drabble entrant to put a bit about themselves in there too.

Who's up for this?

I have to admit this seems a bit insular to me. Too many in-jokes, especially if you include the "funnier conversations". Care should be made to make it approachable to new people.

Still, I don't object to it in any way.

Well with so many budding writers, I'm sure some in-jokes can be explained.

Particularly in the biographies, when we all comment on how we like to kill Psykokow off :p

I like the general idea :)

The psykocides might need their own section. Or perhaps a section for all the drabbles in which writers reference each other instead or original characters, with a psykocides subsection?

Or perhaps his own e-book :p

Noted on references to each other. so I think everyone should think up a little auto biog, and as the e-book progresses we can add the biogs so other readers can get a feel for who we are and why we all pick on 'P'

Aren't there enough drabbles without inside jokes to fill a book? I admit I haven't followed the thread, but I must agree with Darren above that inside jokes will not open well to outside readers - even if you add bios of the authors to the collection.

It would be better if a book like this comprised only those drabbles that do not make inside quips of jokes.

That does sound classier.

Some of the inside joke ones have been week winners though. And the Onesie week was entirely inside jokes.

In general there are a lot of good drabbles, but there are also a lot of poor ones, blatant riffs of other sci-fi, bad puns, and many which aren't even 100 words or don't have titles. A "highlights" book might be nicer, but then I'd hate to have the job deciding what's in and what's not.

Could be a lot of fun (and hard work - don't some of us have lives, wives or work to do?). And what do we do with the finished product (if it ever finishes)? Who gets to read it? How and where is it published? How do we share the masses of royalties, etc., etc.?

Well I think with some thrashing out it could be a great idea .. just needs some thought going into it .. I'm sure there are enough brains here to work out the best solutions ... good Idea !

Elitestories would be willing to act as host for it but i'd need a hand with the html. i am using a CMS though so once the page design/layouts are done it will be easy to add to it.

If we put the book together selectively, some desperately needed continuity might go adrift (that's a joke, honest!). Personally, I don't see any harm in leaving the in-jokes in - the reader will catch on to the underlying humour and quips (or not - but what does that matter?)

I suppose the first thing is to decide for whom the book is being put together.

BTW, Bikky, I see you are noted as the author of the book (Elitestories.co.uk). Shouldn't that be 'co-ordinator' or some such title, if that's what you'll be doing?

I would also, in the spirit of the drabble threads, like it to be unofficially officially noted that I have never tried to kill off Psykokow in any form, manner or drabble. You never know, he and I could be from the same clan.

Addendum:
My forthcoming project for NaNoWriMo is a 50,000 + word novel , provisionally entitled 'Super Cobra IV'. That's an average daily word count of 1667 or 16.7 drabbles per day. At the end of it, apart from probably being frazzled, I would quite like any interested person to proof it for consistency and flow. If it turns out to be worth it and it gets published, I will be donating part of the royalties to E: D.

If you want to do an e-book (for free distribution or charitable donation, for example) then it could do with someone fresh who hasn't participated who knows what they're doing acting as editor - making tough decisions about what's in and what's out and how it's arranged.

If it's going to be a collection on a website, then it can all go in with it's jokes too, as long as it's proof-read and neatly designed (with some hyperlinks to cross-ref. authors and subjects, for example).

That's my feeling :)

Take the top 'n' winners from each poll? (E.g. n = 5 would give 100 drabbles for 20 polls). Plus some will need editing and tidying-up.

Proceeds to charity?

Wow - impressive! Good luck with that :) (I'm only doing a short story - no way would I have the time to write novel in a month. But I do love the idea of it).

Ohh I don't see anything stating ME as the author, or Elite Stories etc.

This is an entirely colaborative work by anyone who wishes to take part, and equal thanks go to all involved, with a special note for any single web/picutre/ebook compiling.

As for the rest, it's all good discussion. My original thoughts were to have a chapter per contest. And as stated people will soon get the idea of how some of the in-jokes occur. That being the reason for a bio, so readers would see the titles of people in there.

The idea of choosing the top or best five or so from each is also a good idea.

The Idea of ebook publishing is that revision 1 can be published with current drabbles, then a few weeks later 1.1 can go out, then 1.2 etc.... until a full refurb for revision 2. or some such.

Bit more discussion and idea's i think before we start making decisions.

Oh and just because I started this thread, doesn't mean the entire work/flow/topics etc are mine to control. This is a collaborative work.

I just re-read my comment. Sorry for how it came over - it was not my intention to sprinkle baptism water. I merely responded to the entry on the Elite stories site.

Agree

Dunno, perhaps needs discussion or a quorum or summat.

To quote Miranda Hart "Isn't 'agree' a funny word? Agree, agree, agree." (sideways look to camera).

The idea of proceeds going to charity is a good one. I suppose, eventually, we'll have to vote on which charit(y/ies) to support. Perhaps collectively we could even set up a charity of our own?

Thanks, Musashi.

I'll probably imbibe lakes of coffee and oceans of beer on the way to the end of November, but it's a sacrifice worth making :p

What it is doing for me is clarifying how the Super Cobra IV looks, inside and out... Ooh, I wish I had a real one!!! :D

Once I get the writing done, I think I'll illustrate it as well. Is anybody on here any good at drawing three-dimensional cut-away schematics of (space) ships, etc.?
