Title: Sympathy for the Devil
Drabble :
They came to Jameson Memorial as was their tradition.

"Why do we do this? They hated us, even tried to ban us."

"We come to pay our respects. They made us who we are today. Not all were against us. Have you not heard the legend of the Ivory Woman who stood up for us? She taught us how to fight."

"I heard they oozed salty water as a defence mechanism."

The elder was shocked at the prospect. "You have been watching too many horror movies my little one."

"...and they had balls of jelly where their cameras should be."

Title: What is the 34th century equivalent of the Daily Mail?
Drabble :
"Where's your poppy young man?"
He turned slowly, catching sight of someone who would sign off a letter as 'Outraged of Mars High'

"I don't subscribe to your faux 'memorials' that glor.."
"FOR SHAME" she screeched, jabbing him with an outstretched finger.
"MILLIONS DIED FOR YOUR UNGRATEFUL BEHIND SO YOU..."

>KZZZZERRT!<

He sighed, and re-holstered his bioelectric disruptor.

A security officer walked up.
"You know that we frown upon random zapping around here?"
"She was a poppy fascist though."
"Yeah, ok, pay a fine and stuff" the officer said dismissively.
He reached into his pocket "you still take Kwikcredit™ right?"

Title: Forgotten
Drabble :
His eyesight was blurry from the bright flash.
He looked in his hands. Ah yes, this strange device.
He twiddled it round pondering what it actually did.
The co-pilot grabbed it "I think you're right. It's an old camera"
The co-pilot pressed the button. The device flashed in his face.

Title: The Fever
Drabble :
It was a bug I caught when I was a child. Not an insect bug. A fever. My dad and I would sit outside at night after working the farm all day. All those specks of light, twinkling down. And when the space station passed overhead, we watched the trails of ships coming and going, wondering where they'd been and where they're off to.

Fifteen years later and I was in my own. Thirty years after that, I'm on the other side of the galaxy. I've forgotten the taste of beer. Chocolate. A lover's kiss. But I remember the fever.

Title: Impressive Family Tree
Drabble :
The Imperial wealth and opulence was rammed down the visiting Federal diplomats face. He could not believe the monstrous family tree growing in the hallway, seeded by the family founders a mere 400 years before.
A grand oak like tree, pruned into an exact representation of the family, with each branch named, each branching twig representing a son or daughter.
The diplomat driven to bring his hosts down a ‘branch’ or two desperately scoured the tree, spotting a distinct cut mark on the tree he smiled wryly.
“Senator, tell me, what’s that missing bit there?”
“Aah, that’s the Remem branch”

Title: Political Manipulation
Drabble :
“Citizens of Achenar, it gives me great joy to announce that the Federal Task Force that illegally entered our system one week ago has been repulsed.
This victory has not been without cost. Many heroic pilots gave their lives to preserve our sovereignty being taken from us by the very government whose oppression we followed my noble Sister into the Stars to escape.
In remembrance of their sacrifice, with a saddened heart I declare the Empire to be in a state of war with the Federation”
From ‘Speeches of Emperor Henson Duval, First of his name’ by the Scriba Helornix

Title: Stationer's Tribute
Drabble :
All those who perished bringing goods to and from our stations. We Remember
All those who lost their lives hunting the pirates that maraud our systems. We Remember.
All those who died far from home, exploring the galaxy to expand our knowledge. We Remember.
All those who were taken from us while carrying passengers in the void between our worlds. We Remember.
All those who never returned from Witch Space and the horrors that lurk there. We Remember.
They keep our stations running, they hold our nations together and they do not shirk from danger.
Right on Commanders!
We Remember.

Title: Another empty coffin
Drabble :
All available pilots assembled on the observation deck of the Majestic class interdictor. The music played and seven gold sidewinders flew "missing man" overhead. There was no body in the coffin, just a few generic trinkets.

"Who died?"
"New Rookie. They called him Sledgehammer. Nobody'd met him yet except the squad leader, and she's in the infirmary after that docking bay crash."
"What happened?"
"Good question. Nobody saw him go down, he just never checked back in"
"Checkin" thought sledgehammer. "Damn. Knew I'd forgotten something." He discreetly covered his name badge with his hand and edged out of the room.

Title: Remembrance Day
Drabble :
They stood in solemn science in the hanger of the station, The lights glowing a dim red as the last post echoed through the communication system, some traditions never faded despite the passing of the centuries.

As the ceremony ended two hundred elite combat pilots made thier way to their ships, an opposing faction were heading towards the station determined to take control of the star system.

Rascon sat in the cockpit of his ship waiting for the off.

"One more war" he thought, "then we will have peace".

Every year they stop to remember but lessons are never learnt.

Title: 0
Drabble :

Davie walked into the deserted bar. The Barman nodded over to a man slumped over a table, a pile of glasses in front of him. One glass had a small red flower in it. Davie sighed, every year Mac promised he wouldn't do this again.

‘Ok, Time to go.’ Davie said softly, helping him up.

‘So many ships on fire, so many friends.’ Mac grumbled, ‘But No monument, no acknowledgement, not even minutes silence any more’

‘Were his stories true?’ asked the Barman.

‘Please remember,’ Mac slurred. ‘Because if you remember one of us, you've got to remember us all!’

Title: Remember
Drabble :
Remember when we used to play
And homework would not get done
And Mum was happy she'd found a way
That we could have a little fun

Remember when summer was fab
And Christmas was filled with joy
Homework still was drab
As you played with your new toy

Remember when you were young
And all the things you used to do
Remember the smile that was on your face
You now see in your children too

Remember these times you had
One day they will be gone
And all the things that made you glad
Memories merged as one

Title: The Rembrandts
Drabble :
Rachel Philmeole pouted, "I'm not doing it, an indentured servant can hold it!"

Joey scowled. "And just how will they do that since our last one choked whilst cleaning out your handbag"

"You're a pig Joey!" Rachel spat, "how was I to know it was allergic to fur?"

"Allergic? Ha! That's a joke, right? The poor guys head got stuck inside a furry handcuff; I can't believe you own those things"

<WHACK!>

Handbag gripped like a flail Rachel screamed "Enough! You're never nice to me!"

Oh come now Rachel, Joey said dodging her attacks "I'll always... be there for you!"

Title: Some things are best forgotten
Drabble :
The night was dark under the cloud cover, but still shadows flickered between the trees.

Time passed and the shadows converged, wary and furtive they gathered on an empty glade hidden in the forest.

At precisely midnight a voice floated across the empty glade,

"Every year members of our society gather together, under the moto 'Lest we forget our guilt'."

Suddenly mechanical humming smothered the voice as Imperial security drones descended from the trees. Light pierced the gloom and deadly lasers flashed.

The members of the 'Sentients of Achenar Rememberence Society' joined the objects of their reverence in eternal oblivion.

Title: In Peace
Drabble :
Kochanski, Peterson , Selby and Chen, to you they're just names on a stone. Part of a long list of names on the Lugh war memorial
But these were my friends. I remember them so vibrant, so full of life, until the attack. And then...
People say that I was the lucky one. The sole survivor from our ship. Sometimes I wonder though.
People say that we should never forget. The chance would be a fine thing.
The nightmares are the worst, but even awake the wrong sound can send me back there.
At least my friends are now at peace.

Frank gave us a spine-shivering view of a potential, sinister future
Simoof's being watching old "Doctor Who" shows, I think, and I had to laugh
Erik captured perfectly what I think many of us have been feeling since the 1980's / 1990's
Psykokow achieved the required groan and a grin
Edith_the_Hutt brought a lump to the throat
Kelgrath brought a grin...

I could go on, but you get the picture (and you've all read the drabbles).

This has been (imho) one of the best set of drabbles yet. So difficult to choose. Well done everybody. I'm sorta glad I missed the boat; I don't think I could have competed.

Its day one of voting, and I'm not going out for a duck. I'm not complaining :D

I dunno, man. I think it's an ill-omen to all of us if a 7 year old's drabble has done this well. ;)

I can't disagree with you, Erik. What's the next theme likely to be? Space nappies (diapers)?? :D
And I agree with Gal. Midden about your drabble; very moving (and true, too!)

I'm shocked! I finally won a drabble again! (I haven't won one in this 2nd hundred so far.)

I've tried writing like other authors (Adams was a big no-no, whereas Tolkien garnered many more votes).
I've tried writing like other drabblers (Simoof & Listeri69 are not ones to style oneself after).
I've tried writing about a dead animal (only works for Psykokow, apparently).
I've tried tugging at your heartstrings (very few here have hearts, so that was a bust).
I've tried disappearing for several weeks to see if a return garnered votes (nope).

So whatever I did must have short-circuited my voters and made them click the wrong box. So to show my appreciation & Thank You(!) to the seven who believed in me, I choose....
