Absense of melee weapons in game

Although I haven't really played the game for a while now, my 6 year old PC still is OK for playing Elite, but not great, and is currently in storage and not being used at the moment as I don't have the space on my desk for it as well as my other machines right now I do still wonder why with Oddessy there aren't any melee weapons available for players?

What's wrong with having a Medieval broadsword type weapon, Roman Gladius, or close range dagger with a hilt? Does it really have to be long range plasma rifles and such all the time?

Where are the melee weapons in Elite: Dangerous? I think they are missing. Any thoughts?

Shields. Unless there's some other mechanism to allow for melee weapon penetration, like the personal shields in the Dune universe that basically removed the use of ranged energy weapons as a paradigm then all you are going to be doing is blatting against a shield that can stop energy and kinetic weapons that carry far more power than anything you can possibly do by hand.

Since shield ships can be penetrated with the Flechette Launcher, there may be some leeway on the shield technology being ineffective against low speed and/or low energy physical objects (if that's the case with flechettes). Then again, I think that the melee hit with weapons (or punches when unarmed) don't bypass shields, so to extend that shield bypass from flechettes (even if partially), a rework would be needed.

Still, I doubt we'll see anything like a sword. At most a baton as a substitute to pistols (maybe we start getting access to higher security places in the future that disallow weapons but allow batons for self defence).

Don't forget your stick Cmdr, you wouldn't want to face a plasmagun battery without that...

From the wiki;

The most noteworthy aspect of this weapon is its interaction with shields. It will bounce off an active shield without detonating, but, the weapon is still active.

They are penetrated when the Flechette is detonated, so an explosion, not the flechette just passing slowly through the shields.

Melee weapons for SHIPS! I want them. Big ass SPIKE for the front that has a separate health pool from the hull...

As for on-foot melee, a big ass SPIKE for my helmet, so I can charge people :)

I think FISTS are the ultimate melee weapon in the game, there's a video that did the rounds a while ago of a group of commanders punching a shielded ship to death.

Yeah, almost FPS games have special melee weapons. But... I heard melee weapons like sword in FPS are more complicated than ranged-weapon on coding works.

Yes! I primarily fly a Clipper as a melee weapon, I've dreamt of being able to fit a spike onto the end of it.

If we're gonna have big melee weapons they should be on giant robots....
You really don't see what's wrong with a medieval broadsword in a SciFi setting...?
At least the fantasy mmo crafting would start to make sense....

Arguments aside... one thing you gotta admit: bladed weapons would look totally badass together with the current aesthetic of the Odyssey suits.

No, didn't want to ruin the books, but I did point out in my very first post the peculiarities of the Dune personal shields that made them, let's say acceptable, in that universe setting. Of course we aren't in that universe setting so things don't work the same way!
