Newcomer / Intro (Absolute beginner) I want to join the Empire

So I want to join the Empire, and help them with whatever cause I can (Assuming that is how the game can be played).

However, I managed to find what appears to be the closest system of theirs, which is insanely far away from me.

Anyone mind helping me figure out an efficient way to make a long road trip like that?

And is this an "ok" thing for a beginner to do, or should I be doing other stuff first? Game doesn't really give you any pushes in any direction, that is for sure.

If you are in the general LHS 3447, Eravate etc starter area, then Liaedin is pretty close to you - 2 or 3 jumps at most. They will gratefully accept any assistance you wish to give the Empire.

That is the one I was looking at, but it is not short. It takes an extremely round about way, assuming my ship can't jump that far. Below is a JPG of the route it wants me to take....

I don't know how far the sidewinder will go, but did you change the option in the Navigation tab from Economical route to Fastest route? Might want to give your FSD a small upgrade, but the route it's taking you on now is kinda ridiculous.

As the chef says, an FSD upgrade could go a long way to making a short route (pun intended). You could always do some local jobs until you can afford a better frame shift drive.

Welcome to the Empire, friend! To join us, you will need to earn some credits in order to upgrade your Frame Shift Drive to Quality C.

Your stock Sidewinder comes with a Quality E Drive, Class 2 (class is for module size).

Your quickest way to get enough credits for such an upgrade is bounty hunting at your nearest NAV beacon. Scan all ships in the area. If one shows up wanted, you are clear to engage. In your stock Sidewinder, concentrate on smaller ships like other Sidewinders, Haulers, Adders, Eagles and maybe even Cobras, but keep away from Vipers and anyting larger.

Once you have 18000 credits, you can buy a 2C Frameshift Drive, which will give you sufficient jump range to make the trip to Laedla in a reasonable amount of jumps.

Doing missions on the bulletin board of an Empire controlled station will be a good way to enter friendly terms with the Empire. Just keep in mind that not all factions issuing contracts on the bulletin board have the best interest of the Empire in mind.

Trading cargo between Imperial stations, selling cartographic data and cashing in bounties on Imperial starports will improve your standing with us, as well. Best of luck in your future endeavours, CMDR!

Oh wow! That is beautiful! :D

I always wondered if the route planner was intelligent to route backwards if it needed to, to get to a specific location, but I've never been in a ship with a route where it would ever be needed.

Good luck getting an upgraded FSD, it will really open up the galaxy to you!

Well, if you still have your basic discovery scanner, that route & a fuel scoop should earn you roughly 12,000 credits with pinging only, more if you scan at least the stars. :) Plus, selling the data to the slavers would directly improve your standing with them.

But that would be rather risky, I guess...

Welcome to the Empire, Commander. We are always happy when free pilots with the right attitude join us.

Maybe the 'scenic route' mode was switched on while calculating that route to Liaedin. ;)

This looks as if you had chosen for the most economical route, not the fastest route. On the 1st setting, the map will plot shorter, but more jumps; on the latter setting, it will make less jumps that are longer. In the Galaxy Map, change this setting in the Navigation tab and then plot your route again. There should be a much more direct way.

I've never liked the Clipper - it looks like an overpriced tennis shoe.

And there's always price to pay, be that financial or moral.

The only price I had to pay for my Clipper was measured in credits. As far as morals go... I find Imperial style regulated slavery much more humane than unregulated illegal Federal slavery.

Same as with prostitution and drug trade. Either you make it illegal, which just means that many more people will suffer from it because it continues under the radar, unregulated, run by unscrupulous criminals who neither care about their product nor their customers... or you legalize it, regulate it, ensure maximum worker and consumer safety as well as product quality and can even tax it and profit from it.

The Federation can go on bragging about how they "don't tolerate slavery within Federal borders!", but the truth is, they sit idly by and let it happen. Those poor unregulated slaves are malnourished, get poor healthcare or none at all, their consent is violated on a regular basis, and have to do the most dangerous jobs under the poorest conditions with little or no training at all.

It is a great dishonor to an Imperial slave-owner if his subjects are treated that poorly. We take greatest care that those who enter our services voluntarily by signing a slave debt contract get the best training and healthcare possible and are trained to do duties suitable for their physical possibilities. They even get free body enhancements if their job requires it.

So claiming the moral high ground over Imperial rule just because one chooses to ignore that "illegal" does not equal "nonexistant" is a bit naive in my own view...

As a newly-minted Imperial Baron (yes I am weaving my way to the Clipper), I thank you for your interest and impending service to our Glorious Emperor!

Wow I love the faction banter!

I'm not ready to pick a side yet. I am quite enjoying scooting around exploring and smuggling stuff! makes me feel rogue-ish

Who said I was aligned with the Feds?

You can rationalize it all you like!

Rationalize?

Those against Imperial Slavery are the ones engaging in silly amounts of rationalization. Claiming the high moral ground while legally codifying a system where those trapped under the thumb of crushing debt must remain under that thumb forever... the cognitive dissonance that must take place to hold such a view would be deafening!

I am relieved to hear you aren't allying yourself with the jack booted Federation, though. There is hope for you yet.
