Accessibility of Galnet was reduced by 1.3, my thoughts on how to make it better

I recently noticed that i had found a lack of story in elite dangerous, but upon further investigation i found that i simply wasn't reading any of the Galnet articles. I had nearly forgotten it's existence, mostly due to the fact that it seems almost hidden behind the powerplay button. Before 1.3, simply docking to any station would show some of the most recent Galnet articles on the right column, and you see if there was something new at a glance. But now, you have to actually want to check if there is a new Galnet article every day by first clicking the powerplay button, and then clicking the Galnet button. it doesn't seem like much of a difference, but i caught myself completely forgetting about the story in this game because of it. I don't see any community goals, i thought for the longest time that there WEREN'T any community goals going on.

Now logging in myself, i can see that there is a big Galnet news button above where the local news is. but that still doesn't have any catchy one liners to get me or other people to read more, it has nothing of the sort. i actually have to go into the Galnet UI to read them. it seems like i am the most lazy person ever, and nobody could possibly get more lazy than not wanting to press a button, but what i am saying is true. With news media IRL, they usually put their big headlines out there first so people wanting to know what the heck went down in City A, or why Celebrity B said that, so they stay tuned to find out what is going on. They are caught by some provocative title, and want to find out the truth. And we have this, don't get me wrong. "Federation Secession Crisis" "Cerberus plague shuts down station services" those are things that catch peoples eye and they want to find out what the heck is going on, But it isn't on the front page where it should be.

However i actually think adding in a button so everyone can check Galnet regardless of how far they are from docking in a station was a great idea, but removing the Galnet articles from being visible when you dock was a terrible idea.

Anyone else understand what i am trying to say? i usually have trouble writing down my thoughts unless i do it immediately, and it took me a little while to post this.

----TLDR----
Make Galnet more in your face, and people will realize community goals exist and start doing them again.

I have made a mock up of what the changes i had in vision might look like: oUWBHOg.jpg

They've pretty much polluted GALNET now with pre-generated "news" culled from the BGS numbers themselves.
That and the overall lack of proofreading and horrid editing skills is why I tend to not look at GALNET.
One would think that an English company with English devs (?) run by an Englishman in England wouldn't have so many errors in their use of English.

I read Galnet in game.

I think it's cool, and pretty well done.

I would appreciate a little RSS style ticker in the sidebar lole they have for station news, but I'm not sure the UI has room for it.

I hope station news gets more meaningful - I'd like that to say, consolidate the numerous commodity price updates into one entry on the ticker to improve signal /noise ratio, so I can see the articles about local elections and wars and stuff instead of endless reports on the price of fruit.

Those were things that the community requested themselves, they wanted an easier way to find systems with civil war, etc so they didn't have to look through every system in the galaxy/system map just to find out.

I keep an eye on Galnet. I actually want more news generated from data and sim, I consider the hand crafted articles to be placeholder. I hope so anyway.

I don't; it's irrelevant to my gameplay. Hopefully if Powerplay is gutted and rewritten Galnet will become something worth reading.

This tends to boggle my inner jackboots as well.

I don't read the main stuff because it's in the powerplay tab and I never have any reason to click on it, so I just totally forget.

Nope, not a fan of the implementation. it's actually less clear and harder to navigate.

If I could filter out all the powerplay junk, and just get reports on community goals / economy news i'd probably use it.

a chunk of text about Powerplay 'news' that has no actual effect on gameplay is not adding content & personality to the galaxy.

You know what would be fantastic, but never going to happen? A news feed like in the first Starship Troopers movie... "do you want to know more?'

I'm more of a doer than a reader. Reading muchly in games is super duper boring. I have the Flipboard app for reading.

Yes, checking Galnet is part of my routine now...

Log in, check Galnet, load up with drugs n guns and go forth to do my bit for the Archon!

I think that the picture OP posted is a really great idea for a news ticker, and it would add a lot to the game in a small way. You should totally repost just that picture into the suggestion forum - I fear this thread will get lost, what with the generally negative title and the wall of text prior to the photo.

I completely get what the OP is saying, I check it a lot less since 1.3 now that I think about it. I really don't like the layout, it's just one long list, could it not be done more like a website with different headings? Agree that headlines should be more obvious, like 24 hour news rolls running along the bottom of starport services. Plus the in ship implementation is horrible, the complete disconnect from your ship means I don't really bother when in supercruise. I had expected it to just be in the system panel.
