Accidental first interaction with Odyssey: It's a swing and a miss.

I was testing mining ships in ShinDez when I got a request mission to go and collect a couple of doodads and deliver them to Qi Cultivation Biome in ShinDez.

Seemed like a nice little trip so I accepted it.
Jumped in my shiny, new, Mandalay, went and collected the doodads, headed back to ShinDez, located QI Cultivation Biome, requested landing permission and... Denied.
Small pads only.
Awhatnow?

Okay, I can deal with this.
I have an SRV so I can land outside the outpost and transport the doodads inside using my SRV.
I deploy my SRV and, like a good little citizen, I park at the perimeter, exit the SRV and walk across to the main HAB, go inside, look at one of the terminals and, yep, they have a "Delivery Bay".
Great!
I go back outside, find the delivery bay, walk back, along the road, to where my SRV is parked so I'll know the route to drive along without mowing any pedestrians down.

First, though, I need to go back to my ship and transfer the mission doodads to the SRV so I can deliver them.
But... I can't.
Turns out that once mission objects are in your cargo hold you can't transfer them back to your SRV. :cautious:

So, I have to fly back to Jameson Memorial, buy a Cobra and fly back to QI Cultivation Biome again so I can land on a small pad and complete the mission using only Horizons UI interactions.

To be fair, I suspect this isn't, technically, a problem with Odyssey but in Horizons there was never a need to transfer mission cargo back to the SRV.
Now, with Odyssey, surely it'd make for a much more rounded experience if you could land your ship and use an SRV to offload cargo?

Still, on the bright side, I guess it does mean there are places where you need a small ship. 🫤

Haven't tried Odyssey yet, but I've been hearing that the Cobra MK3 and the Viper MK4 are great favourites for Odyssey settlement missions.

Missions taken from Starport Services interface have to be completed by ship.
Missions taken from Concourse Terminals have to be completed on-foot/SRV*

(*small caveat: Kill scav missions can be completed by blowing them up from your ship using dumbfire missiles)

The two different mission boards are completely seperate, again with a small caveat that they now allow on-foot mission hand ins from the Starport Services interface to save you having to get out and take the lift to the concourse.

Some settlements are small pad only, so Cobra, Viper, and Vulture are your friends for on-foot missions, as you don't have to worry about pad size and they can land pretty much anywhere.

To clarify, I didn't get the mission from any mission board.
It was an "inbox mission" that I got while I was out test-driving mining ships.

Main point is that, since we can land ships on the surface, outside an outpost, and the outposts do seem to have "delivery bays" (no idea if they're actually functional), and we do have the ability to deliver mission cargo a bit at a time, it seems like all the pieces are in place to allow us to complete these missions in a variety of ways... except that the game arbitrarily refuses to let you transfer mission cargo back into your SRV.

Shame really because it'd be an opportunity to link ship-stuff, SRV-stuff and legs-stuff together coherently.

Maybe in the future they'll implement it.

None of this is functional. This is a standard Horizons era mission and you need to do it all from the ship via landing in the pad.

Yes, it is awkward that you didn't have the right sized ship to complete this first time without being notified.

On that note, in case anybody's thinking "Why would you think you could drive an SRV into a surface outpost"... you could do that in Horizons.

A lot of the surface outposts in Horizons had SRV bays that you could drive into and gain access to the Starport Services UI.
In fact, there was a "feature" where you could land your ship on the surface, drive to an outpost in your SRV, click on the "Shipyard" and your ship would magically have arrived at the outpost and be waiting for you.
While transporting sketchy cargo I often found it useful to be able to land out of range of patrolling ships, drive to the outpost in my SRV, access the Shipyard and then be able to unload cargo or complete missions.

I just assumed a similar thing would be possible in Odyssey - especially when I the outpost terminal specifically tells me the outpost HAS a "delivery bay". :(

Then it most certainly should. It's annoying to go to a mission only to find out your ship is too large.
I'm surprised it's still possible for this to happen 10 years later. I remember having this issue in the beta, lol. Those damn space outposts not having any large pads, but the mission not telling you beforehand you're going to a small space station.

MIssion boards now flag and block them being taken, but obviosuly they didn't extend that to mission offered over mail

IIRC, its how I used to get to Engineer settlements in Open.

Shame they've not integrated it properly in Odyssey
