Accidental friendly fire fix

That elitism, it seeps.
I've had a bunch of friendly npc ships friendly-shoot me in a friendly way, they kept on fine.
Why should i be punished when a npc gets into my crosshairs? Is my reaction time supposed to be greater than that of a server instanced bot?

Common sense, practice it.

Wait I can answer that.
Why should you be punished when a friendly NPC gets into your crosshairs? Because you shot them. Simple as that.

NPC's need love anyway since they can no longer get bounties if a player has done any damage to a ship in the last 10 seconds, having them being able to accidentally shoot you and keep on going only seems fair.

Agree wih OP in that it's down to the pilot to have situational awareness ... but wish the response was less of a PITA. Hauling back to a station to hand over 200 credits ain't the most fun I ever had. On the spot fines anyone?

I could get behind that for sure. Maybe less than 1000cr total is a fine you can pay on the spot? Like a ticket or something you can take care of remotely

Everyone will side with the OP until it happens to them :D

It has happened to me a half dozen times or so. I never intended to shoot the friendly, they just got in the way.

I'm still on the OP's side. I'm learning how to hunt and minimize the risk to friendlies. Trigger discipline really helps.

Agree stuff needs to be a bit more consistent but in general I love the friendly fire mechanic and would not like to see "2 free shots" or whatever brought in.

Combat has been highly praised in most ED reviews, let's not start removing whole elements on the grounds that there's a learning curve.

Friendly fire is just another layer in combat for you to deal with, it adds interest fer God's sake and makes a furball with friendlies a much more complex affair than a one on one. I have never seen a poster wanting it nerfed even recognise that. =/

If there's a risk just cut the lasers for a sec.

Or to put it in other terms..

If you're playing a racing game and a corner's coming up, ease off the throttle a bit. Some people just want to hold down the accelerator and feel if they can't the game's at fault.

It's the difference between a racing game that's about things moving fast and a racing game with some depth requiring a modicum of skill. As I say ED's combat has been widely praised and I want combat to be something where youu need to be paying attention, engaging your brain and thinking rather just holding down the trigger and following the target.

From a personal point of view, yes I have had NPCs run in front of my targeting reticle, yet oddly I have never hit one. I'm really not a particularly skilled pilot, I won't even go near an Anaconda without support.

I have however accidentally hit NPCs but it's pretty much always when I'm throwing a ton of imprecise laser fire and multi-cannon shot at long range at a target near/behind which there are friendlies, which of course was my own choice.

In all honesty I have to say I feel the "but NPC ran in front of my target" is a bit of a straw man. Yes NPCs do do this but it's so easy to release the trigger and not hit them that at least in my experience it's a non-issue.

Claiming "NPC ran in front" does however allow the poster to claim there's "nothing I could do about it and therefore friendly fire must be nerfed" so I understand why people wanting it nerfed constantly rally round it but as I say I can't help feeling straw-man. It looks a strong argument on the face of it but for a lot of people who've been there, "the NPCs keep running in front and I can't NOT shoot them!" doesn't seem to actually quite tally with experience.

As I say combat's been well praised, please let's not start nerfing whole aspects of it without some serious thought and at least a bit of acknowledgement from those wanting it nerfed of the positive aspects of it.

works for me normally, but i still managed to clip a viper once yesterday while chasing down a wanted.
or more to the point the viper went out of his way to boost between me and target and straight through my line of sight.
meh, still finished off target and got the hell out of dodge and paid my fine at the nearest outpost.

so maybe a 3 strikes you're out rule would be helpful.

And if the racing game black flagged you because you hit another car that did something stupid like cut in front of you and brake as hard as possible on a straight would you just say "situational awareness" and "learn to drive" at someone who complained? It is not a good mechanism and will happen occasionally to almost everyone no matter how skilled. Flinging inaccurate fire against distant targets in a crowded area is one thing, accidentally landing a single multicannon round on an idiot who's just decided to cut across your bows is something else. Yes, it does happen.

Not sure about that analogy.

If a car gets in front of you and slams on it's anchors then yeah you'd absolutely be expected to come off the accelerator or suffer the consequences.

100% agreed. Focus, awareness and get ready to release that finger off the trigger.

A little more intelligence from the game would help as well though.

Agreed to both.
But trigger discipline does not help much if you are tailgaiting a wanted ship very close and a braindead police ship boosts in ya line of fire after hitting your ship`s back a few times (without consequences).

A good workaround for this would be only to fine from the second hit, not the first.
