Accidental 'turning red' in combat zones

I initially wrote this post to answer a player's thread, but I think this is a better place for it, as there is a suggestion in it for the dev team.
The OP spotted a design flaw indeed, or maybe something that's not super clean.
It happens that players on your same side turn red for accidental behaviour. I have chased to death dozens of players, some of them after having started a fight vs me, some others I just saw running away from the battle zone. If I knew some of them turned red accidentally, I wouldn't have opened fire on them.
Sometimes it happens friends of the chased ship say "please don't shoot him, he is one of us". That might help understanding the situation, but it can be also exploited, then it's not mandatory to believe it. So I'd prefer to have a different design for this occurrencies in combat zones, the officially tells me what happened. Something like a "probably hostile" status lasting 15/20 seconds in which, if you persist being hostile, you actually turn red, if not, you get back green after 15/20 seconds from your first wrong shot. In this "probably hostile" status I can pay attention to your moves and easily spot if you are running away to have the "green" restored or you are actually shooting at me or my buddies in disguise.

Actually I think that it is a feature. It gives you a chance when you are outnumbered by enemy CMDRs. You side with them, then you put your ship between a CMDR and his target: when he has turned red, join the party... :)
