You are very fortunate, and I'm happy they chose to refund the money for the lost ship. I figured they kept extensive logs. I would in their shoes, but backups require disk space and that costs real money.

I guess this is a lesson to carefully check your options before you click continue on the insurance screen. Fortunately a lesson that didn't cause a whole lot of grief.

The Devs should fix this so that insurance is automatic, and if you can't afford the excess your ship is sold, and the money is used to pay the excess and buy a basic sidewinder (so at least you get 95% of the sale price in cash).

The problem with that is you might be able to lower the price enough by unchecking modules you've upgraded (thereby fitting the standard modules) and thereby bring it into reach. If it's automatic, you don't have that choice.
