Accidentally shooting friendly ships once shouldn't warrant a bounty.

Stop complaining about Friendly fire. If you use Common Sense. Like Velixar said. Don't spay and pray. Use your radar and sound. Those are Important.

Radar. Use Zoom in Radar you can see where NPC are to your ship. You can also see them come in hot That when you stop shooting.

Sound. Use stereo or better yet Surround sound. So you can hear the other ships coming right or left. watch where that target at.

Important. Look out your Windows. If you see a Authority or Clean ship flying in front of you. STOP SHOOTING.

Laziness is not a skill.

How do you "Hot Wake Out"? My situation was I could not outrun the ship with Thrusters - this guy was chasing me for minutes until my shields depleted, and each time my FSD failed before completing the jump. I could easily have turned and destroyed an "Allied" vessel - but this should never be required.

And what happened to the old military adage that you do not fly through someone's fire? If there is a stream of red coming from a ship, you don't fly through it. Mistakenly hitting a ship is not a common thing anyway, but the punishment should fit the crime - simply unrealistic AI. Some might say lazy AI. And as you so eloquently put it Lestat, laziness is not a skill.

Hello, War4peace. :)

I know it seems frustrating, but the other posters are right: it really is mostly just a matter of not being careless. I've been playing for a year, I still get in trouble for friendly fire, every now and then - and it's always my own fault for not paying enough attention to what else is going on around me.

It's a matter of discipline: always be aware of the other ships; be aware of how your munitions are going to fly if you suddenly lose your lock-on; don't let the enemy get so far off-target that losing lock-on means a sudden spray of bullets across 10KM-worth of screen; keep your ears open for some clown boosting into your line of fire, assuming both your hearing and speaker setup are adequate.

There's a case to be made for implementing less-stupid AI, so fewer problems are caused by moronic NPC pilots directly boosting into your line of fire. There isn't so much of a case for changing the consequences of collateral damage, especially when - as now - jumping away reduces those consequences to a trivial fine.

Best of luck with your next bounty-hunting run, old chap. :)

Don't spay and pray.
Lestat, I sincerely thank you for the single biggest laugh I've had all day. :D

I agree with the OP's suggestions. Recently, I was earning millions in a High RES hunting with 3 Anacondas from the Alliance Enforcers but lost it all after an authority Viper ship flew in front of my firing line. All of them including the 3 condas turned on me almost immediately and killed me before I managed to escape from mass lock. Whilst I agree you have to be careful when/where you shoot but it's difficult when a clean fast ship flies in front of your guns which fire constantly - e.g., beams and multi-cannons.

It's also not right when a clean or authority ship shoots you in the cross fire they do not get a Wanted status and you don't get an apology :p

That topic's been discussed to death a long time ago.

My two cents, for what they're worth, could be applied to most situations as well : https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/285485-A-suggestion-about-the-Virulently-Vengeful-Space-Police

Ultimately, it's all about getting smarter, more complex and deeper AI behavior and being ble to interact with them in a more refined way - which is lacking in all aspects of the game. That, admittedly, takes a lot of work... but it theorethically shouldn't require much more hard work than convincing one of those forumdads running amok who systematically start ranting condescendingly about "common sense" or "difficulty" or whatever else like the current NPC behavior makes any bloody kind of sense whenever this topic is brought up...

The current system is lackluster and has nothing to do with "living dangerous" (as some elitist say) it is just flat out silly.
As long as you just hit shields and not cause damage, fines in 200cr steps should stack, up to a certain limit maybe (just brain storming here).

Like
Hit 1: 200cr
Hit 2: 400cr
Hit 3: 600cr

...

So you've got enough time to
a) realize whats going on (stupid fed fighter flying through the line of fire, let's face it...)
b)to cease fire - without terminal consequences.

If you, however, hit a ship that has no shields active and you cause real physical damage, you should instantly get a bounty like it is now - or excessive fines.
Most ships do have shields activated and together with some caution, it should prevent most of these silly friendly fire cases.

While this might not be the perfect solution, it may represent a work around. If this would happen in reality, you could simply state the fact that it was unintended etc.
We can not communicate with NPCs at all, so it would only be fair if they not go instant-gung-ho on us cause they cross the line of fire.

Talking about self-responsibility...

Good except for the bounty part, I would say fines unless you do significant damage to the other ship (>25% hull) or if you destroy the other ship, which would get you bounties and KOS status.
