General / Off-Topic According Jenseng Huang, the people are "Crazy" to buy a GTX instead of a RTX

Jenseng Huang think it's crazy not to buy RTX.

He targets AMD RX 5700 and indirectly low-income people.

"SUPER is off to a super start for and at this point, it’s a foregone conclusion that we’re going to buy a new graphics card, and it’s going to the last 2, 3, 4 years to not have ray tracing is just crazy."

"Ray tracing content just keeps coming out. And between the performance of SUPER and the fact that it has ray tracing hardware, it’s going to be super well positioned for throughout all of next year. "

He must think that young people mainly have unlimited bank accounts.
Indeed.

Also, it seems odd that Microsoft cancelled a previously announced graphical upgrade to MineCraft - then the next thing is that they announce a ray-tracing graphical upgrade for MineCraft. I expect that a chunk of NVidia's marketing funds have gone into paying for that upgrade....

The big ones of this world are doing their small business between themselves.

:)

I don't even understand why would you even have RTX card right now. There are barely few games that have proper implementation, and those that do require top of the line card just to get half passable performance. Forget about 4k, or 1440p high refresh rate. What is even the point? Nvidia got everybody to beta test their half baked hardware, and charge stupid prices for it. Huang knows that what he's saying is a complete dross, but hey...you gotta promote the product somehow.

If you want to use the RTX features of a current or soon to be released title at an acceptable level of performance, then you need one of the RTX parts and probably one of the higher-end ones.

If you don't have a specific use case in mind, then an RTX part, specifically for the ray tracing features, is a waste, because in "2, 3, 4 years" there will be far faster parts out that will be capable of supporting those effects at lower prices.

The suggestion that the next generation of consoles are expected to be capable of some form of raytracing might bode well for AMD - in terms of units sold as well as developer familiarity with the methods.

.... which may be of some concern to NVidia.

DXR and Vulkan ray-tracing will work on general purpose shaders as well as dedicated hardware (which need not be NVIDIA's). Even NVIDIA's RTX can be enabled on non-RTX parts (it just runs like trash), as I've experienced myself with Quake 2 RTX on my 1080 Tis.

NVIDIA's RTX is like G-Sync...a proprietary implementation that get's NVIDIA's foot in the door early, but which will ultimately be supplanted by more general purpose and more open standards. I think RTX was a good move for NVIDIA, given their market dominance at the time of it's announcement, in that they needed something more than raw performance (which they already had) to set themselves apart from the competition (which included their own legacy parts that they wished to discontinue). However, consumers need to realize that what's good for a manufacturer is generally not good for them. Open standards and fierce competition is how you get the best parts for your money.

Raytracing is the future, but dedicated ray-tracing hardware, not so much...at least not until ray tracing has largely supplanted rasterization in general, which is a long way off.

I plan to buy new triple scrns and a VR head set. Before that, I need a new graphics card and I plan to save and spend about Cad$1,000 on <what ever> but before that I need to buy a new PSU ... and I'm still saving for that! :D ... my bank account has other demands on it too...

Weird, the way he spins it almost sound as if the cards are not selling. I can tell for a fact that over here some cards are already in stock outage!

The Asus RTX 2080 super is nowhere to be found over here, and that from the day they where released.🤨

It's worth noting the context here, namely that his quote was from the Q&A during an earnings call. You can find the transcript here.
Bit of an embarrassing slip-up.

Then again, he knows what all the new RTX games to be announced at Gamescom are... So, expecting current cards to be usable for that in 2, 3, 4 years... After the blockbuster releases of Quake 2 RTX and Minecraft RTX, perhaps the next one will be FTL RTX? :D

Well seen ! The technology is changing so fast.
