Achievement Unlocked: I got to Sag A* and all I got was this lousy achievment.

As well as:

- First Landing (Land successfully on a station)
- Outpost landing (Land successfully on a outpost)
- 50th landing (Complete 50 successfull landings)
- 100th landing (Complete 100 successfull landings)
- Rank 'Novice' (Get to combat rank 'Novice')
- The reaper gets them all (Die in your Spaceship)
- a million miles (travel 5 lightseconds)
- The longest journey (reach Hutton Orbital)

What a waste of completely good developer time.

see you all out there,
Commander Benderson

I got within 5000 LY today but had to turn back because plot routing was impossible in the core :-(. My poor little dual core just couldn't handle it. One core would get pegged at 100% while the other was idle, and the game dropped from 60fps to 0.3 when ever I tried to plot a route further than 30 LY.

It's like that even with a fast machine.

Michael has said that they have a fix and it will be released with the next content.

I had this game back in the 80's, it kind of invented the whole idea of achievements.

Whenever you ranked up your combat skills a little thing popped up on the screen saying "Right On Commander". They company that made the game even ran a competition to see who could unlock the "Elite" achievement first.

Man I wish I could remember what that game was called, it was pretty awesome for the time.

I plan on going back in my Anaconda then, because while the diamondback is an awesome ship, it starts to take forever to refuel with the A4 fuel scoop lol.

Yeah, but the game didn't complement you on 'sucessfully blew your nose'.

In the list of dumb achievements, you forgot 'Right on commander!'.

Getting to dangerous or elite is an achievement, something that happens to you inevitably when you play the game longer than 30 minutes is not. Most of the achievement in modern games fall in the second category.

But your complaint was about wasted dev time, the code to implement achievements would be the same regardless of what the achievement was actually for. Killing a Capital ship or blowing your nose, the code is the same. In 1.3 we finally got Achievements (or something pretty much the same) with the reintroduction of "Right on Commander" and that was something that the majority of us old timers had been asking for for a while.

I have no idea how much effort it was to code and test, but I suspect that it wasn't a lot. Having a dig at Achievements seems to be more of a "PC Master Race" vs the consoles (not aiming this at you, just a generalisation) and as such is pointless.

Real gamers have a kick ass PC and a collection of consoles, cos they love games, not because they need to validate their spending choices by slagging of those who choose differently. Otherwise we end up like ...

That would be Activision games back in 82 (if this is to believed)

Fair play, I bow down to the collective wisdom of Wikipedia. But my point that Elite has had them since the beginning still stands ;)

Elite 84 was really tough. I played quite hard for a year and never got past Deadly I calculated that Elite would have taken me 5 years. None of this "Triple Elite in 10 days" or "Centre of the galaxy in 9 hours" That's for today's instant gratification kids.

I never considered grinding to be worth being called an achievement.
